OK, heres the deal. I've been offered a '96 Jaguar XJ 3.2 V6 for a bag of sand (€1000).

There's around 100k miles on her, the alloys will have to be refurbished, and there is a tear in the driver's seat.

She's also starting very irregularly, i have a feeling its a sticky starter motor, so thats not the end of the world.

Anyone any thoughts or comments on it? Should i or shouldnt i?

not worth it for the cost of maintenance and tax in my opinion.

It would be mainly to keep me occupied at the weekends. I'd only tax her for the three months of the summer, and garage her for the other nine.

If i need to drive her for any of the other nine months, i have a trade plate.

It would be myself and the oul fella, and were both on trade insurance too, so that takes care of that area.

As you may have guessed by now, we are both in the trade, so getting work done on it wont be too expensive either.

Is it not a straight 6? Anyhow, seeing as you're in the trade and can insure and tax it cheap and are not going to be using it as a daily driver I'd say go for it.

Even though you can get work done by trade contacts just be aware of the parts prices for XJs. Parts can be very expensive - much more so than for more mundane cars. If you were to need a replacement starter motor it might set you back more than you think.

Mmm, i know the parts can be expensive, but it does help that one of us work in a Jag dealership too, so happy days for nice parts discount! See. I have thought everything through! Or most of it anyhow.

Im just unsure if its a wise way to blow a few hundred quid, and then the rest.

Ah you'll always find someone to take it of you for a grand.

And if the worst comes to the worst and you ever need to weigh it in for scrap - it's a near 2 tonne car :)

Yeah i found that out wheni towed it home the other day because it wouldnt start. Lack of brakes at 30mph is fairly hairy!

Do it. For a grand, and the discounts that you can get for the parts and labour.....no brainer.
    Best of luck anyway.

I can think of plenty of less wise ways to spend a few hundred - plenty of people will simply piss it up against the wall. Go for it!

Go for it if for nothing else other than a project to clean it up get it running smoothly and that sense of satisfaction knowing it now sounds as good as it does and looks as good as it does is down to you.

If you can afford a 3.2 engine go ahead. Jags are cheap now because of the large engines.

I could think of a million worse things to do with €1000. At that price I'd even use it as a retro green house in my back garden if it costs too much to put back on the road.

We may wait and see what is causing it not to start from time to time first. She wouldnt start all day on Sunday, but she started no bother yesterday!

After that, its a case of seeing what the oul fella wants to do....

Did you check the fuel pump relay? I had a bad connection on mine in the 928 and it caused similar intermittent starting problems, very annoying! Once I replaced the relay ($4), the problem was gone.
