I was in a game with a chap and we were both down to the double in a set decider. He was left on double ten...threw the dart...and it hit double 15....but the dart didn't make great contact with the board so started to fall out. He waited a few seconds until sure enough it did fall out. Can he just throw again for double ten?

as far as i know, a score only counts if the point of the dart is in/or touching the board when the dart is being retrieved.

so in this case as the dart was not retrieved before it fell out of the board it didnt count so he was correct to continue throwing for a double

who won in the end or did you stop playing?

As far as im aware the ruling states that a dart only scores if it maintains contact with the scoring segment of a dartboard. And i have never heard or read any rule which states a player cant wait to see if a falling dart will fall out so to answer your question i think he can throw again for the double 10 :):)

He won the leg.....but funny enough it happened again a short while afterwards....I was left on double 5 and I hit 5...but again it didn't look too steady and it slowly started to move southwards....5....10....15 seconds later it finally fell out. There has to be some kind of 5 second rule...

Just found this on the WDF website. Hope it helps cos i cant find anythin about a time limit

3.02 A dart shall only score if the point remains in or touches the face of the dartboard, within the outer double wire, until after the throw has been completed, and the score has been called and recorded on the scoreboard.

So if on a normal throw you get treble 20, treble 20 and before you throw the last dart the first one falls out....what happens here....hmmmm

In this instance only the darts actually touching the board when you retrieve them will count for scoring.

So therefore there should be nothing wrong with waiting a few seconds for the dart to fall out? Although it doesn't sound right to me

there is nothing wrong with waiting for the dart to fall out, in most cases you dont want the dart to fall out because you would be losing points.

the situation you explained is a rare case where waiting for your dart to fall out is to your benefit

just had another look at the rules and reg's from the BDO and they say that darts touching the board count right up until they are retrieved and the score is called and marked.

The PDC say that a player has a maximum of 3 mins to complete a throw to allow for dart repairs and the likes of that and it also includes crowd disturbance as reason for holding up a throw for a maximum of 3 mins so considering all of this it sounds like a player can wait up to 3 mins to complete his throw

Sound a bit off i agree but i cant any rulings that say you cant wait for a dart to fall out :)

The only case in which it counts is if the person marking, or calling the game calls, BUST

once the call has been made and its marked on the scoreboard then its history
i would imagine the caller has the right to call in the case of BUSTING a score because your throw would now be over, you have scored too many so the next person should now be stepping up.

on another note, you want to get a darts stone and sharpen the darts and grit the sides

Yup, the lads are dead on whatever darts are on the board when the player is retrieving them. Hence the '180 Dash' whenever a dart is nervously in T20 and you see a player legging it up to the board before it falls out.

This. Whenever something similar happens on tv, the referee will immediatly say no score and won't wait for the dart to fall out (unless it happens instantanious of course) and your throw would be over. Of course in pub games and other games without formal referees, you would be entitled to use up your 3 minutes i guess.
