I have been away in Australia for a year and a half now and whilst here i have aquired a schecter hellraiser, a blackstar ht5 combo an a rake of pedals etc which i am gonna ship home. Do i have to pay additional tax on this stuff to bring it back to ireland? If so how do i do this?

Also ravelleman, what did you mean by this?

The company you're using to ship your stuff back should be able to tell you exactly what will happen.

Yeah just check with your shipping company or ring customs...

The first time I moved back to Ireland (92) I had to get letters from doctors etc. saying I had lived out of the country for four years and everything was personal possesions in order to avoid any tax or issues (although it did include vehicles)..
Second time, I didnt need to do anything (but that was from the UK, and I had been away 15 years), we just had two artic's move all our stuff, no customs forms or whatever.

One thing to remember, which was missing from the other thread, iirc it's not up to customs to prove you owe tax, it's up to you to prove you don't. So if you are worried, do the research in advance.

I don't have any experience doing it but I would imagine it'd be a good idea to have receipts for your gear to prove when you bought it.

I emailed seven seas shipping company and they said the following:

"Taxes and duties can be charged by customs on new goods, alcohol and cigarettes.

As long as you have owned your personal effects for longer than 6 months, there should be no tax or duty payable on the goods that you ship to Waterford."

So digging out my reciepts will be my next job. They are here somewhere, i just hopei didnt put them in too good a place.

Just double check it with the Tax Office dude. Its the first I heard about the "6 month" rule, but great if it goes in yout favour.

As far as I was aware, if you bought the guitar outside the EU and brought it back here, you are liable to pay Customs Duty. I recently bought some recording gear from USA on EBAY and took a chance with the Customs Duty, it only worked as €60 anyway. Fair enough, thats slightly different to your own situation.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

You are liable to pay VAT and Duty and point of entry. I believe duty is approx 2%. If you can produce a receipt to prove you paid tax in Oz you may get away with the VAT

P.S. If you are shipping this with other personal possessions you should be ok also, provided that you can prove it has been in your possession for some time.
