Jobs in demand?

With unemployment of around 11% at the moment I know there are more people than jobs out there at the moment.

However I wonder are there any sectors of the economy where there is still a decent level of jobs available or sectors with more jobs available than others? Be it skilled or unskilled.

mac_iomhair banned for a week for being a muppet.

OP - apparently accountancy is still going strong, unsurprising considering how many companies are in administration.

Legal looks like a poor option at present

i believe that engineering (electrical) is holding up

there are always sectors that will be able to sustain a recession:

    - People will always want/need to get a haircut (unless the shaggy look becomes extremely popular)
    - People will always die (undertakers business)

I'm sure there are others - but cant think of them off the top of my head

Car mechanics' business is on the rise, since the new NCT legislation was introduced. Since people don't want to buy new cars, they will want to fix their engines, so they'll go to car mechanics more often.

IT seems to be holding strong...well not shedding massive amount of jobs anyway...yet! all be in contract rates are being negotiated down but there are still jobs..

Healthcare is generally a non-discretionary expense. Recession or no recession there will always be a need for health services.

HSE has a free on hiring at the minute so I wouldn't say there are that many jobs in this area at the minute.

Not in all areas. And there is a large private healthcare sector aswell.

i'm afraid IT is not escaping the recession.

In most businesses IT is seen as an expense. In our dept, 3 people were made redundant, and the poeple left behind have to carry the can, doing nealry twice the work in some cases.

And expenses are the first to be paired back. My brother is an experienced trainer, but cant get much work.

Perhaps contract work and outsourcing are doing okay, but i doubt it.

i think also because contracting work may be slightly on the rise with companies looking to short term rather than hiring full time

Spot on, finishing my degree as a clinical measurement technician in a few weeks and it's looking like I'll be heading to the UK even though departments are crying out for staff, when I started we were told we were pretty much guaranteed jobs due to shortages but now there's no funds. The dept I'm currently based in have been refused locum funding for staff going on mat leave.

Employment agencies are very busy at the mo-not surprisingly

Fast food restraunts are also doing very well since people are buying cheap food on the go.

These are only industries-not specific jobs

    You mean, in particular, FAS?

    Recruitment agencies are dead.

Cardiac, respiratory, vascular and neurophysiological testing. Brainwave measurements, cardiac ultrasound etc If I was sticking tape measures on inside legs I'd be a dress maker!

Jobs that are still strong are pharma and medical device reps, mostly made up of health professionals (essential in some areas like pacemakers due to attending implants on request) that want a career change but a lot of business/marketing people too.

Discount supermarkets: Lidl and Aldi are doing a huge amount of recruiting.

IT is still in demand as some companies look at the old one where IT can do a couple of peoples jobs.

Some places are letting IT people go but really depends on the IT place.

Some s/w houses will be shedding jobs but big companies will be keeping or hiring.

Unfortunately that's just propaganda. I know as I was made redundant twice in four years. Plus most of the lads I was in college with have taken up jobs ashore now too. Very few jobs and even less job security for northern European officers at sea any more. :(

You only have to open the telegraph to see alot of the bigger companies recruitment campaigns. And moving shoreside is a natural progression anyway, and what most people aim for after serving at sea for a few years

The telegraph has always been thus. Considering how often it's published and the amount of people in the mn, it actually equates to very few jobs. Shoreside progression to building sites, nursing and service industries was not such a natural step ;)

Plus with all the ships being laid up and day rates dropping, the writing is on the wall.
