    what is the Turbo/Supercharger

Turbo and Supercharger are two different ways of getting more power out of a engine. Usually a car is either Turbo or Supercharged. Each have their own advantages/disadvantages. Turbo usually kicks in by revs in the engine, supercharged has instant power as its driven by the belts in the engine.

They both do the same job as in produce more bhp but in different ways.

Both force the induction of your engine ...give it more air to breathe, so that more fuel can be injected ...more power is the result.

A turbo is a turbine driven by exhaust gas, a supercharger is a mechanical compressor driven by the engine itself (via a shaft/chain/belt)

    Turbo pro's:

'Free' energy - uses waste exhaust gases to spin up a compressor and blow air back into the engine,

    Cons:

Takes time to spin up, hence turbo lag.

    Supercharger pro's:

Instant power, since it's driven bya shaft/belt connected to the engine itself.

    Cons:

Loses a small % of power through the shaft/belt.

Logically, the best thing is to have both a turbo and surpercharger.

The best explanation I read was that a turbocharger is like a bellows for a fire. It adds more air to the air fuel mixture, making a bigger bang without the need for more fuel.

Both super & turbochargers add more air, but fuelling does have to be increased accordingly.;)

both the 140 and 170 bhp VW Golfs have turbo's and superchargers the 122 has a turbo

This was definitely a problem in the past but manufacturers seem to be addressing this problem now. For example, the joint venture by BMW/PSA produced a twin-scroll turbocharger that has virtually
eliminated lag. This engine is to be found in the Mini Cooper S and Pegueot 207 GT/GTi models. Another example is the new Jaguar XFR which uses some fancy tricks to deal with lag through the use of two turbos (one variable geometry one fixed geometry).

Are you sure about that? I always thought that myself but then someone else told me that a kompressor badge is actually a trim level and doesn't mean that the engined has forced induction?

Anyway.. i don't really like turbos/superchargers myself, much prefer the power band of a well tuned normally aspirated engine. If i had to choose though, i'd rather a supercharger over a turbo..

Kompressor is German for supercharger, was surprised to learn that as well.Bit of a well kept secret :)

I'd rather the turbo.. Means you can drive casually when needed and have then boost when required (granted it's well tuned and native to the engine) and not attached to a skangermobile

In an ideal world, i'd rather a big engine with neither. Turbos soften the throttle response, and superchargers (to my ear) tend to sound like sh1t.

Super charger all the way. Who knows someday maybe... http://www.pes-tuning.com/g4_newsletter_11_25_08.html

BTW no longer selling the car. I'd regret it forever. Phew!

My Troll0Meter™ (TOM) is deliberately undercalibrated, but that just went off the scales ;)

    lol,

Kompressor is German for ermmm, compressor, which is what a supercharger is, roughly translated.
Except when you see some pimped out corsa with "kompressor" writen in those 2 euro chrome badges from halfords, in that case its german for w@nker. :)

i wasn't trolling honestly, someone had me convinced that kompressor was a trim level, think it was my brother  and now i look like a tool on the interweb :o
