Classic films you just didn't "get"

What classic movies did you just not see the appeal in?

I found "Schindler's List" quite pedestrian, didn't care about the characters much. Life is Beautiful and Sophie's Choice are far better.

"Rocky" as well, just never got going.

Really?! I though 'Schindler's List' was one of the most moving films I've ever seen. It was very close to the book, a heartbreaking and disturbing read:(.
    I hate 'Star Wars' films!

i heard citizen kane was the american film ciritics choice for best film for the last (many) years running, and its an old one, so i thought, if an old film still tops the list it must be excellent....

    it wasnt:(

Was just talking about this film tonight. Has to be the most perfectly made film ie. Acting, story, music and so on, but there is a difference between entertainment and quality. While linked, they can differ.

Godfather part I and part II are undoubted masterpiece cinema. All the little details; the narrative, the choice of images put on screen, you really have to watch it multiple times and analyse the details. They're what make it so special and what make it so widely praised.

You do realize the reason why it's so iconizised is because of it's originality/innovativeness yes?

Just because you don't think it was excellent doesn't mean it wasn't. I'm sorry for suggesating it was beyond you but there's no means around this.. there's a reason why it's continuously voted one of the best films ever made.

As for the Godfather films, I can't understand how people didn't "get" 1 or 2, maybe 3 but certainbly not the first 2.

I can totally see why McCruiskeen didn't get Mulholland Drive because it is incredibly hard to get but why 994 didn't get Rocky just begs beyond belief? Are you sure you didn't "get" it and maybe just failed to relate to it? I think the wording of the thread has caused confusion because what isn't there to "get" about it?

In Schindlers list the only color part of the movie is the young girl being loaded onto a death train, best I could figure was it represented Schindlers consciounce being awakened.

Anybody got a theory on that scene?

The Godfather - A dull film about a wedding - masterpiece of cinema my ar5e.

Apocalypse Now - Good film until that fat turd Brando shows his face.

Come to think of it, with the exception of The Waterfront, just about every film I can think of with Brando in is utter sh1te - and no, I'm not kidding.

Citizen Kane - While not that engaging entertainment wise it is a masterpiece technically.

The Third Man - Brilliant cinematography but dull story.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - (YAWN!) Seven hours or so of CGI fights and people walking across mountains.

Edit: Just remembered that other couple of hours of dullness called 2001:A Space Odyssey

Blue Velvet is easily the greatest tripe I've ever set through. With the exception of Elephant man, David Lynch is an utter clown.

It was filmed in black and white as all Holocaust footage is in black and white...it makes it more authentic. The child in the red coat was significant as it affected Schindler to see her...she stood out more in red. The actual child Roma Ligock was a real child who was well known for her red coat. She survived the Holocaust unlike her film character. Spielberg said...."America and Russia and England all knew about the Holocaust when it was happening, and yet we did nothing about it. We didn’t assign any of our forces to stopping the march toward death, the inexorable march toward death. It was a large bloodstain, primary red color on everyone’s radar, but no one did anything about it. And that’s why I wanted to bring the color red in."[....

    Any movie by David Lynch.

It's all personal opinion -specially as lots of people didn't get the Godfather, one of my favs but glad to see '2001: A space bore' got a mention and as for Citizen Kane while an enjoyable movie hardly the greatest ever.
Surprised no one has mentioned a Beautiful Mind which was a bit of a plod IMO.
The movie that just passed me by, not because I didn't get it but because I thought it was such predictable rubbish was 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.'
Maybe I just don't like movies with the word 'mind' in it

Schindler did actually exist, the odessa file is fiction - based on a novel written by Fredrick Forsyth.

There's another reason why I hate Lynch. Because people who are really into him think anyone else who doesn't like him must be a miseducated pleb.

I'm really into Lynch and don't think anyone who doesn't like him is a 'miseducated pleb'. Indeed, you are suggesting that anyone who likes him is 'pretentious'. (Most) people don't like David Lynch because of some misguided attempt at pretention. No, people like him for a variety of reasons. He is one of the most technically accomplished film-makers about (Eraserhead is such a fantastic symphony of sound, image and editing). He also tends to make films which have original, engaging structures that don't treat the viewer like an idiot - he trusts people enough to make up their own minds, to engage with the film and negotiate the complex narratives. He also knows film - Mullholland Drive in particular is a wonderful homage to cinema, drawing upon and subverting the typical Hollywood cliches (hero getting the girl etc...).

I always enjoy his films, as they provide something fresh, original and intelligent. I can see why people don't like him - some of his films are overly complex (for all its tricks, Lost Highway has fairly simple themes) and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was a somewhat forced continuation of the show. But for the most part he is one of the most exciting directors around.

I think that scene was aimed at the audience to be honest.

You felt a deeper connection with that child in the film than all the others in black and white. Also the scene of the clothes being burned at the concentration camp features her coat.

As Stalin said "one death is a tragedy but a million deaths is a statistic" or something like that.

The ending was crap so you didn't miss much.

I watched the departed again recently and by no means a masterpiece but I thought Di Caprio's and Nicholson's performances were worth the admission price.

Mark Wahlberg was OT, they phased out Alec Baldwin and Matt Damon's character was poor.

Actually scratch that in typing this I realise how badly the film was put together. On a side note loved the song Shipping up to Boston in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,431 ✭✭✭✭Saibh

I wouldn't count it as a classic, but on account it won 5 Oscars, I will say American Beauty - watched it once, that was enough.

I thought making it in black and white was a mistake even though it is still a great movie. In black and white it made you feel it was ancient history removed from our lives today. Whereas the Pianist was more shocking in colour and felt like more recent events. Would have made it an 18 cert which I suppose they wanted to avoid.
