BB Creaking -- Shimano Crankset and BB

    Guys,
I run Ultegra SL on my bike and was wondering if the bottom bracket was part of the crankset or not. It looks like from what I read on a website that the BB cups are just holders but I'm not 100% sure.

The reason I ask is that there's a BB creaking on my bike and I need to sort it. I also have to replace my headset so I'l do that first. I know creaking can be the cause of 4 different things..... (add more if you think there's others)

    1. BB needing replacement or faulty.
    2. Headset not running true and sending noise into the frame
    3. Hubs on the wheels not being tight enough (Mavic Askiums)
    4. Frame movement - I have discounted this one as the noise is only new. If I do steps 1,2,3 then I look at this issue. Basically I bought the bike in N.I and don't have time at the moment to go up there and sort it out in store. It will cost me less to buy all the bits and fix it up that it would to take another day off work to drive up North and sort it.... I guess there's a lesson there

Could it possibly be a saddle creak,I had this once, and I was convinced it was bottom bracket as the sound was resonating down the seat tube, try a little grease on the saddle rails and seat tube, and see if it helps. It's worth a try

Fooling around a hollowtech BB is pretty easy ... so I'd give that a go ...

Take the BB off ... grease the threads ... you can even take the dust caps off and grease the bearings themselves ...

The obvious next one would be greasing the seatpost.

I've never heard the headset result in a creak ... it usually starts feeling rough .. and the fork starts vibrating on rough roads ... and even in Irish weather .. it takes significant weather for the headset to go bad .. simply because its further away from all the road crap.

My cranks (not the shimano ones) were creaking, turns out they just needed to be pressed tighter onto the BB (square taper yoke).

As above, a proper disassembly and regreasing is hopefully all that is needed and will save you from having to order new parts, however shiny and attractive they may appear on wiggle :)

I'll have a crack at it -- I'm only hesitant because my bike is an integrated one where the cups are pressed into the frame. I took the headset apart yesterday with no issue so do the BB today. Bikes are really extremely simple when you get into them.

That is true ... they are simple things ...

With my first bike, I brought it to a bike shop to get the BB changed ... 50 quit .. and I thought not too bad .. but when I looked at the receipt ... it was 15 euro for the BB itself (sora) .. and 35 for fitting ...

Now unless there is something I lack the tools to do .. I will have a goof around ... even if I install something wrongly and damage it .. I can buy and redo it for cheaper than getting it done in a bike shop ... atleast the knowledge stays with you.

Truing wheels & changing headsets .. are things I might leave to a bike shop though ..
