Dart Players in Waterford

I almost said darters there haha

There's going to be a new weekly League/Cup taking place in a Waterford venue in May. It's open to regular players as well as people who just like to throw arrows for fun and who hope to get better in time.

I'm looking for some experienced players who would like to help run this weekly event. You can still play every week, but you'd be helping out with the format of the league as well as maintaining it on the night. There will be a fee each monday which will go towards a prize fund and also paying the 1-2 people (a modest amount) who will be running it.

I was asked to run the league but I don't really have the time. The first thing I did though was contact some local people who are involved in teams and leagues etc. Straight away I saw that these people had become so deep in "dart politics" that they definitely weren't the people needed to make this work.

Anyone interested can let me know...or indeed anyone who has any pearls of wisdom when it comes to the dos and don'ts of running a weekly darts league...please post them here.

have herd plenty bout darts politic in waterford and that is with out ever wanting to know about them!! Are you planning a league between pubs or just a regular handicapp played in the same pub each monday.
If so where were you think of playing??

any idea on a date for it to start then ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

I've been told that it's starting in May. Every Monday night.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 jimbo272

any word on whos running it ? is it a city league or a can others play ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

All I know is that it's not going to be run by anybody currently involved in the darts circuit in Waterford. There will be 4-5 dart boards, with one main board on a stage with a camera aimed at it.

I presume there will be a handicapped league system and an all in cup scenario.

sounds a cracking idea and badly needed in waterford !! do you play much yourself ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

I do...I play in the Rising Sun every week...just with a mate of mine. You should have seen the faces the first time we came in with the laptop and the N01 software. They all love it now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

I'm trying to find out now. Bit ludacris that he's asking for my advice but won't even tell me where it's going. I think it's going to be a harveys or masons. Would have to be somewhere that size.

probally. Not exactly darts houses. The late bar could be good if the darts are bad!:)

It's Masons. I haven't been in there in a while but apparently they're launching as a sports bar soon. They've installed new screens and have put in 2 pool tables with the dart boards on the way. According to the email -
    Mondays - Darts League
    Tuesdays - Poker
    Wednesdays - Pool Tournament
    Thursdays - Quiz Night
    Friday - coyote ugly night

    All drinks €4

I don't care where it's on if I can get a bottle of cider for €4

Just been informed that advertising for this won't commence until next week and anybody who'd be interested in helping out running it can contact an email address I was given. PM for details.

Unfortunately under 18s would not be allowed take part. A pity, but it would be on a premises that would be selling alcohol.

Fair play to Masons for relaunching, a sports bar is badly needed in the city centre as we currently have none. Be great to have a pub with four or five boards where you could get a game most of the time:D

wondering would it be the fact that nobody was going in there during the week have something to do with it ?? if masons was doing well would they have it ????:D . anyway told few lads so hopefully

lol I love this attitude...Look at them all selling umbrellas just cause it's raining...pah. People complain about pubs and shops not doing anything to give people better value for money....and then when they do.... [see above]

what you plannin on running. will it be just a game of darts on a monday nite or will it run for x ammount of weeks with players gettin points to form a league? there is pros and cons to both. but i have rules book made up for the league i run and can e mail it two ya if it helps.
one thing ive learned is have rules clear from stard and have everything covered so then can be any rows.

Here's something that I suggested to him...

Basically we get a load of players down for the first night and lay on some food & drink and just throw it out to the flower how they'd like it to be run. That way there's no use and them attitude and everybody gets a say in how things are done. There will be 4 boards originally. The N01 software will monitor the main board all night so we'll be able to see scores on half the screens and classic darts matches on the other screens.

A €4 drinks menu and food menu will be available all night also.

By the way...this is being launched by Russ Bray and Wayne Mardle.

Why couldn't this be in Dublin? Sounds like a great idea.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

They've gone with Winmau Blade III boards. What you guys reckon about that?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,326 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Oh controversial. Personally I think the Eclipse Pro is a much better board. They both have practically zero bounce outs but the wires are much thinner on the eclipse pro making the scoring section bigger and makes for better darts games. The wires are far too thick on the Winmau board and I don't understand how they have not made the wires thinner by this stage.

I suppose it's a matter of opinion but Eclipse for me everytime.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

I think they set out to get one of either board (after reading a thread on here) and the eclipse was harder to find around town and they wanted to have the boards up for the weekend. It's a decent enough board all the same.

By the way...this is being launched by Russ Bray and Wayne Mardle.

They are not coming over till September though apparently because Mardle's schedule is too busy

Aye that's true....it's the only time he could fit into his schedule.

ive seen things like this go wrong so many times when there is not a clear set of rules about things. i know your only starting out and want to try cater for everybody and thats why your goin to ask everybody what they want but as ive seen before everybody will want diff things and if you go with one persons idea rather than another then ppl get annoyed.
personaly i find if you have sorted what your goin to do and mearly inform ppl of whats happening it works so much better.
one bit of advice i will give you as regards gettin a regular crowd is the start time of the comp. if you taking names from 9.00 till 9.30 then doin a draw at 9.30 then do that even if it means refusing ppl on the first night. they will be early the next night and the ppl who were there will realise your cut off time is just that.
i been told be a 99% of the ppl who have to travel to go to any of the comps i run that they do travel because they know it will start on time and they wont be out all night.
for eg i played in a comp this sunday it was to start at 3.30 and finish about 7- 7.30 the first game was at 4.50 and the final started just after 10.30, everybody apart from the locals wher complaining especially wifes and girlfriends who were there at 7 ish to collect there partners.some with kids

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

Thanks for that. To be honest it was me who suggested meeting the players first but I see where you're coming from regarding planning it first.

So...suggestions required for the best possible format?!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭greened

    Anyone go here last night?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 jimbo272

Not starting til May. Although I was in playing last night. You could have popped in for an autograph :D

the posters were designed too late to get into this week's press. So that might delay things. He sent me a poster for it but i can't attach it cause it's too big to upload

7ish? We can discuss the format of the league. Anyone else interested?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭mussha

A minimum of x players will be required to hold a round robin event. Names must be in by x:xx no exception. First games at x:xx.
A maximum of xx players can play on any giving night the first xx players to enter will be entered, a player my enter at the event a week pervious to guarantee there place if they fail to turn up at time of first game another player will be sought and entry fee is non refundable.

Only paid up members may score league points. League points cannot be redeemed at a later date. Player must enter a minimum of 4 events as a paid up member in order to have any game points registered on the leader board.

Points will be awarded as follows throughout the season :-
    1st place 5 points
    2nd place 4 points
    3rd / 4th place 3 points
    5th / 8th place 2 points
    Qualify from group 1 point
If qualifying from your group results in a placing from 3rd /8th place without playing any knock out games the player will score 1 point for qualifying and not a placing point.

The league will run over 16 weeks with the top 16 ranked players qualifying to the finals night. The top 16 will be divided into 4 seeded pots for the finals night draw the pot been :-
    (1st – 4th ) (5th – 8th ) (9th – 12th ) (13th – 16th )
Each group will have one player from each of the seeded pots.

Players tied on points in the league table will be separated by amount of there entries into the round robin event. I.E. if there is a 3 way tie for 10th place and player A has 9 points from 5 events player B has 9 points from 7 events and player C has 9 points from 3 events then rather than a tie it will be
    10th place player B 11th place player A 12th place player C.

Any member must be paid up for 4 weeks in advance to avail of any club benefits ( throwers and non - throwers )

Annual membership is €xx with nightly entry been €x

Both men and women will play in same league.

Round robin will be run as best of 3 games of 501. The 3rd game will only be played if it is one game each.
After the group stages, games will still be best of 3 games until the final, which will be best of 5 games.

There will be one toss of bull per game closest to bull will go throw first in the 1st and 3rd game.

There will be 2 points awarded for a win and 0 for a loss in the groups stages if at the end of the group there is a tie of points then winner shall be determent by games won then who beat who.
If there is a further tie then regardless of amount of player there will be a single game of 501 with player throwing in order as they appear in the game sheet. First player to finish the game will be winner if required the game will continue and the second player to finish the same game is second off board.

The player in last place in their group must remain at their board to mark the first game in the knock out competition.

All games will run as per the pre made game sheets. If for any reason a player is not able to play on time the game shall be awarded 2-0 to the other player. First games start at 9:30.

There will be a bonus prize and 1 ranking point for anybody getting 13 dart or less game this will reduce by one dart every time the target in met.

There will be a bonus prize and 1 ranking point for anybody having a 141 or higher checkout this will increase by 1 every time the target is met.

I got a 161 finish last night!! woot. Thank god i did it in front of people rather than at home on my own!

Well done mate, great finish and especially hard in front of a crowd.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

Well it was only 5 people...but they're witnesses!! That's all I care about haha.

Thanks Kingp...really need to work on consistancy though..think my next throw was 26. A couple of lads came in asking about the darts league (who may have heard a 161 celebration haha)....it's all set to start next week lads.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

This is starting tonight if anyone from waterford is interested in coming along for a game.

The official start is next monday but we hope to get in a small knock out tournament tonight...it's really just going to be a meet and greet session. We're pretty much going to run with the rules and guidelines that mussha posted up and hopefully we'll get a few heads in tonight.
