I take it you don't want to format it? Have you tried it in another mmachine?

Dont want to format , because i presume you would lose all the saved data on the external drive .

The blue light keeps flicking on and off , so maybe it is a loose connection ?

I will try in another machine

I have tried the external hard drive in other PC's and it asks the same question '' do you want to format hard drive ''

Surely if I format , I will lose everything on it ?

Yep, you'll loose everything. Sounds like it is has a serious problem if it's prompting you to format it...
