False tooth - expensive?

    Hi all,

Hoping somebody can help me out here. My last baby tooth fell out last night, it was either a molar or a premolar, can't figure out which. Anyhoo, I now have a gap in my teeth which is visible when I smile, but that's not my main concern. I don't have a second tooth underneath that, which is why it was never extracted. I had braces from when I was 14 to nearly 19, to close all the gaps in my teeth left from when some of my baby teeth fell out and there were no second teeth to fill the gaps. My worry is that my teeth will start to move now that there's a gap, and I'm hoping it's possible for me to get some sort of denture to keep the gap open.

I'm not in a position financially right now to be going down the route of getting an implant, but long term I know I'll have to. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a single false tooth that would just pop in, or what would the best solution be? Also, how much roughly would something like this cost? And would I be able to just go to a regular dentist, or would I have to find some sort of specialist?

Sorry for asking so many questions :o I'm terrified of dentists and was hoping to have as much info as possible before taking the plunge and going for a visit! :) Cheers!

Ideally you should return to your orthodontist who can easily fit a spacemaintainer (or adjust your retainer if you have one). If it's a long time since you had your ortho done--you didn't say how old you are-- a regular dentist can sort it for you. shouldn't be too expensive.

Hey! You have lots of options in the short term!! I had one of my front teeth knocked out. I decided to get a dental implant (ill come back to that) the day after my tooth was knocked out I went back to my orthodontist who had only taken my braces off a month previously!! She took a mould of my mouth and got a new retainer made for me with a false tooth stuck on it!! I dont think she even charged for it! Probably felt sorry for me!! You could also get a cap, not too expensive. I went for the dental implant and I have to say Im delighted with it. Had it about 5 years now and would highly reccomend it. Got my implant in Cavehill dental in Belfast, used to get the train up to them and they pick you up at the train station and drop you back to the station. They would prob sort out a cap for you as well!!

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm 23 so it's been nearly 5 years since I've had my braces off. I only had a retainer for 6 months. I'd prefer not to go back to my old ortho cos TBH, I'm not entirely happy with how my teeth turned out, I asked for a permanent retainer but he said it wasn't necessary and I had a plate type retainer for 6 months, then nothing, and my teeth aren't as straight as they were when the braces came off. :(

Long term, an implant is the way I'd like to go, but tis reassuring to know I can just go to my regular dentist in the meantime :)

if your teeth are nearly straight, a spring retainer can help. google it for information.
