Tell me about VoIP

Are any of you guys using the VoIP service like Blueface?

I'd like to replace my eircon line, because I don't use the phone that much and I'm paying them 20 euro a month just for nothing, but I'd still like to be able to make a call to a landline or a mobile once in a while.

How does it work? if I change homes, can I keep the number? does it follow you anywhere you go, or how is it?

Also, who is the best VoIP provider right now? I only know of Blueface.

Have to say Blueface are spot on, never a problem and you can see how much a call cost you seconds after hanging up.
Your number is isp and location independant so you can use it anywhere you can log into the Blueface sip servers, eg I have a sip client on my mobile and an extra Blueface extension number for it and it is tied to my main account so anywhere in the world I can use WiFi I can make calls using my blueface account, (providing the SIP servers are accessable, not found a place yet where they aren't). It is probably the most elegant solution I have come accross for VOIP.

@ Weird Named user..... I guess CG is the only person to use Woopsy.... FTW

I convinced my mam to change to Blueface and port her Eircom number and its worked out perfectly. Took 10days to port her number after trialling for around 6 weeks to make sure her connection was ok. She now pays €9 for 300 mins pm worldwide. Only drawback of Blueface is that its expensive to ring Irish mobiles, but just use mobiles to ring mobiles.

You can trial a softfone (software phone) on your pc, just download and install the software from the Blueface website and setup an account. Do this on a desktop pc connected through ethernet and not running on wifi on a laptop as this adds extra latency. Then You can buy credit, available in as small as €5 at a time. They recommend that You don't sign up to a package or port your number until You've ran a few weeks trial.
