    Just for a laugh.

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, uptime is how long your computer has been running without a reboot. If you have iStat Pro installed it'll list it, or alternatively launch Terminal and type "uptime".

My iMac's uptime is: 17 days, 7 hours.
    My G4 iBook's is a whopping 182 days and 23 minutes!!

    lol. Still running perfectly too.

Grrr, you had to ask the day after I restarted! :D

Current uptime: 1 day, 8 hours, 37 minutes
(but my server: 83 days, 0 hours, 42 minutes) :pac:

It was about 9 days yesterday until the dock completely froze on me.

Would be around the 120 day mark, but we've a dodgy circuit somewhere that keeps tripping switches so it's just over 24 hours now. Can't recall ever having to restart it in the last 3 months, bar for software upgrades.

    I'm sure it does. :D

However, uptime doesn't count sleep. It's just the time since the last reboot. And I can't speak for anyone else but my carbon count number is fairly low.

On a serious note, how much energy does a mac use in sleep mode compared with being powered off?

Some old models are shown here: http://kom.com/reviews/apple_power_consumption/

The newer ones are much better IIRC

    Some newer details here: http://www.apple.com/environment/energyefficiency/

    Yeah it's very low.

3 watts per hour in sleep mode is pretty damn good compared to the 70-100 used when it's fully on. A lot of appliances would use twice as much just for being plugged in. Even when on, dimming or switching off the display can save up to 30 watts as well.

You need to investigate a litte ebefroe a statement like that

    So is mine

Dead right , for an appliance you need to figure out ,
1 if it's used every day
2 if it uses more starting up y times a day than staying idle for X hours
3 what else you have plugged in ( your mac may be efficient but your external Hard disk might not , or your monitor )

I don't see how this information can benefit you unless your running a server etc.

Sure, the iBook would start faster from sleep etc but I fail to see the point of this post.

Agreed, 3 watts is great but why bother. When its turned off, its uses zero.

Hence the "just for a laugh" bit. I'm not running a survey.

I fail to see the point of yours. If you think it's pointless then why post in here? Lighten up a bit will ya.

When it's unplugged it uses zero. When it's plugged in it still uses 1-2 watts.

    Apologies...

I just assumed that uptime stats was a trivial thing that most people are aware of. Its an issue that I deal with on a daily basis and it can have its negative effect on workstations too (of course there are also benefits).

Based on previous figures I found when researching server power... the workstations are something along the lines of:
    About 20% less than Windows.
Debian is about 30% less than Windows.

Not sure about the notebooks but I'd imagine alot less :D
