Loss of Innocence

I don't believe at everybody loses their virginity at 14 or 15, which seems to be the common perception theses days. I think it puts pressure on young people and they believe they are abnormal if they are virgins at 16.

I think it's a little insulting to say that anyone who's ever had sex is suddenly "not innocent".

It's also a bit delusional to say people retain their innocence up until the moment they lose their virginity, kids are exposed to sex through the media long before they even understand what they see. Most people are fooling around with boys/girls before they even have sex. If you hop on over to the Clearasil and Hormones forum (lol plug...) you'll see in the sex discussion thread most people didn't see losing their virginity as a big deal, most certainly not as a "loss of innocence".

I think it depends on the person, the situation, their reasons for becoming sexually active and the person with whom they're doing it... rather than age.

I see the OP's point, it's just the phrasing is a bit off: in and of itself, 14 and 15-year-olds having sex is not putting pressure on other 14 and 15-year-olds, but a culture which normalises this and propagates the notion that EVERYONE is sexually active at 14/15 is bound to put the pressure on some.
"In my day" :D it was 16 (or 17 at the latest) that was considered the "normal" stage and I was still a virgin at 18 and felt like a freak and was convinced I was the only one, apart from nun-type girls, of my age group who wasn't a virgin. It was obviously a load of nonsense but I couldn't have known that at the time. So I just got sex out of the way with some random guy. That was me having sex for all the wrong reasons. And I wasn't the most impressionable of teenagers.

There is a notion also that all teens are horn-dogs - not true. Not everyone just wants to shag anybody who's not monstrous - if it was so natural and spontaneous, why are so many people dreadfully nervous the first time?
And while sex isn't a big deal for some people, it is for others. Maybe that's socially and culturally derived but that doesn't make it less of a reality.
It can also be more of a big deal for girls than for guys - pregnancy and fear of first time pain being the obvious factors.

I had the sex at 16. Her mam and dad was out, and we were both naked on the bed fooling around. She very directly said to me "Would rather just have sex instead?". I said yes ofc and she grabbed a box of condoms she had hidden under her bed.

I was a happy panda :pac:

Fair play for not using text speak.

Interesting to note how few people were 16 and under when they first had sex.

Also interesting to note how many still have white halos - unless Terry has voted multiple times.

I wonder how many priests are 'still wholesome in the eyes of the church'

I was 12 when I found bertieahern.com while doing a school project and would say I pretty much lost my innocence there and then. It was a few years later that I lost "ye olde virginity".

I think most people lose their virginity to fingers, hands, toys or tampons; not people. (or pandas)

And I always though that waiting till I was 17 and in love (ha) was me being good.

So, assuming a good few people clicked the last one for a laugh, the statistics are something like

    15% lose it before 16
60% lose it between 16 and 19 inclusive (myself included!)
25% lose it after age 19 or have not lost it yet

    Not really suprising tbh!

i was still fairly naive about somethings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,311 ✭✭✭✭K-9

16/17 seemed to be the norm "in my day" too, though 18/19 wouldn't have been out of the way.

14/15 seems normal for a higher percentage now, which is worrying. Suppose it will be 13/14 next and we'll still get the "sure they aren't necessarily innocent" line!

I wonder about the people who said they were not innocent when they did it the first time. Did they remember their johnny, did they know how to put it on etc.... I hate them by the way but that's another story.

Does gay sex count? Id imagine seeing how the church does not see homosexuality as legitimate, you would still be considered a virgin in their eyes if all ye did was do gay stuff -

ps - not gay, only rode a man once

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 283 ✭✭dee8839

I was almost 18 when I lost my virginity. I can't say I'm sorry I lost my virginity the way I did because at the time I was so mad about that guy that it was the right thing to do. What I do regret is thinking that I should stay with that guy just because I had already spent that length of time with him. We were so wrong for each other. And yet we stayed together so long that by the time we properly got over each other we had ruined any prospect of friendship. He hates me now and I can't help but think its partially hate and partially love. Wish we had been free to meet others from day 1 instead of wasting our 1st and 2nd year of college on a pointless exercise.
