    Without anyone getting into the rights/wrong of it and separation of church and state.

    What is the origin of the ban of sale of drink Good Friday ?

    It's what happens when a religion which attempts to control pleasure-outlets also controls a state's law-making apparatus.

    I don't think there was anything specific behind it. Just an amorphous desire to see people give religion the reverence that religion felt it was due.
