cycling without front derailleur

    the cable for my front derailleur has become frayed and wont hold tension anymore i was thinking if i just took off the whole mech would the chain stay on which ever chainring i put it on?? thanks for any help

    I think it would, but you'd be better off getting a new cable.

    Yep, it would work fine. But a new cable is about €1.50.

    go fixed gear and you will have no cables to worry about:)

    Don't agree. Chain gets bumped around all the time. Even if you are not shifting, the derailleur is helping keep the chain on the chainring. If you remove the front derailleur entirely, the chain will fall off going over a pot hole or off a kerb or something else.

    You might be able to use one of the limit screws of the derailleur to move it into the correct position with no cable attached.

    i have a single speed that i must get around to switching, i much prefer riding it but i'm not fit enough yet to cycle home from college on it. thanks all
