I only need a new nut and new strings and my action to be brought down
    would they do that?
and how much would it cost roughly?

    cheers

I think that they're trying to tell you that Waltons is overpriced, and/or terrible. Can't say I've ever availed of their services, but have seen a few tales of woe about them posted here, so you may want to do a search on the subject and perhaps find someone else to do the work.

    I guessed that
but it can be any music shop not just Waltons
all i need is a rough price for...anywhere

    any recommended places aswell?

    cheers

Sound Gear near Portobello Bridge might be better than Waltons.
I'm totally guessing here: new nut 50, general set up incl new strings 30.

Not making a balls of it = priceless.

When you find out how much Waltons or whoever actually charge for this would you do me a favour please and post it on here. Thanks.

Waltons normally direct those kind of queries to Frank Tate, a very talented (and busy) luthier round the corner from them on North Great George's Street. (I think thats the Street anyway.)
I have his number - pm me if you want it.

BTW he's a bit slow due to usually being very busy. Probably more so now since he's got recognition for making Rodrigo & Gabriela's guitars, or whatever theyre called!

Not exactly rocket science, is it. You could buy a good quality nut on ebay. Avoid the cheap plastic ones at a fiver.

New strings.......€8 if you want to get ripped off. Pack of 10 sets on ebay from UK for about €35.

And lower the action.......man, you could get a mate to restring it and lower the action for free. All you need is to get the nut fitted.

You will have to get the string thing yourself for your own benefit.

    Pffff......€60.

Getting a nut installed is/was about €40 or so in Musician Inc. At least that's what I was quoted , once.

On the up side Waltons do actually stock quite a lot of Graph Tech stuff so you might get a Tusq nut there. I think I paid about €22 for a set of saddles before. Mind you, make sure you know what you're looking for because I've never met anyone in there that was of much help to be honest. One guy didn't know the difference between the regular saddles and the Graph Tech acoustic TOM

They also don't do repairs - I asked them once to put a strap lock on a guitar I was buying and they said no because it was such a dangerous operation.

That's a life and death operation alright ! Even sky diving is safer. :D I assume they did n't want to be sued if the locks became undone and your guitar was damaged.

    a dangerous operation

haha love it... its bloody strap locks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,443 ✭✭✭Red Sleeping Beauty

Yeah , they said it was because you have to drill into the guitar . It was a few years ago so perhaps their method of installing strap locks have changed. I know mine has, I put down the automatic drill and picked up a screwdriver. Much easier (insert shruggs shoulder smiley)

interesting but this is BS, Waltons definitely have a repair guy, installing pickups, pots, strings some times but he isn't in the shop, i took my guitar there for a pickup change, was 60 eur and got the guitar back after 2 days.
best option is to email them and get a quote/time

It's not bull**** - I bought an Epiphone les paul a few years ago and a strap lock, asked them put it on and was told they wouldn't cause drillinginto the guitar is dangerous and a professional would have to do it.

Ah right. Well they might have a repair guy now but I didn't see a price list of services anywhere. €60 for a pickup swap is pretty desperate though. Was it a semi hollow guitar or something or were you having some fancy wiring/switching options?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

That's probably yer man round the corner from Waltons doing the work, as boycey suggested.

Learn how to change your strings yourself! And lowering the action is simple! Don't be giving people money to do that kind of stuff!

i got 2 burstbuckers pro fitted in, new electronics and shielding, tbh that's pretty common price for this type of job. anyway the guitar rocks now, :)

Exactly......change the strings, lower the action.....save a f**kin' fortune. And get someone who knows what they are doing to change the pickups.

60 f**kin' Euro for that is a f**kin' disgrace. I can't believe that people here accept that as the norm for a simple job.

Re pickups - I know a lot of people don't fancy messing with their guitars, and a lot of yis probably have much more valuable guitars than I do, but I was born a tinkerer and I'll die a tinkerer; CHANGE YOUR OWN PICKUPS!! :D

I've dismantled and rebuilt my Squier strat, mostly for fun (I wanted to paint it too), and I really really enjoyed learning about soldering and basic circuits, sure, it doesn't work perfectly, but I built and it makes sound - I'll take that over a perfectly working characterless guitar any day.

It's not that hard!! And anyone that takes the time to do it properly will probably do a better job than most factories - when I bought the Squier strat mentioned above, it had a rubbish, awful, pathetic excuse for shielding!

i tried to do it myself once but just didnt work out, id love to be able to do it properly, i can fix the odd jack or input jack or switch, but pickups always seem to go up in the air

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭rcaz

I babied myself through it - studied a few wiring diagrams, and drew a few pictures so I knew exactly what to do.
