Playing AVI on PS3

Is there an easier way to do it than to convert the file or to copy it onto DVD? Preferably cheap.

If not, could anyone recommend a good video converter that does it fast and free?

Will your ps3 not play it as it is?

Sorry, not entirely sure what you are asking.

Whats the actual encoding format of the AVI file?
AVI is just a file name, is it DivX or Xvid or MPEG4 encoding?

    ps3 should play it
if it doesnt stream it to ps3 with google code ps3media server
    http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

eg turn on ps3, turn on ps3server on computer,
on ps3 icon will appear: eg directory, on mine : googleps3/c:/downloads/lost.avi
on the off chance it doest work
googleps3/c:/downloads/transcode/lost.avi it will transcode unsupported avis

free, magic, and saves buring to disc

Wow the ps3 media server is awesome. Way better than the mkv2vob and tversity combo I've been using until now. It seems to transcode and remux any mkv I have on the fly with just default settings with no problems.

The PS3 Media Server is great. Works prefect out of the box for me on any machine I've tried. It also gets updated regularly, works on Linux, OSX and Windows and also transcodes on all 3 platforms.

Sorry if this sounds like a noob question
You mention "The PS3 Media Server is great"
what media server do you use for the PS3? - I haven't done much myself in relation to Music/Videos/Movies etc on the PS3

    Cheers

never knew ps3mediaserver had a mac version out.

now i can use my silent macbook to wirelessly connect to my NAS box and run the server off that, rather than my clunky pc that sounds like a jet. :)

    I would 2nd , 3rd & 4th PS3 media server , it is fantastic and free .

If your not using it then get it here :

    http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

It takes seconds to download and will save you hours in converting files (avi etc) works straight out of the box and no settings needed , perfect for the NOOB.

It will convert whilst streaming any movies that are not compatable with your PS3 , i cannot BIG IT UP enough , this is at the peak of freeware and makes me smile and have faith in good people on line everytime i use it .

IF YOU NEED ANY HELP OR ADVICE WITH IT , THEN PM ME !

Try using this PS3 media server that's quoted multiple times in this thread!
It played a load of obscure formats and encodings i use, although I don't know if it will play 2HD, it probably will, worth giving it a shot anyway!
