Wife was having probs with her machine so I had a look at it.

Appears my son got to play on it and she didn't switch it over to the child account. He got bored and appears various applications were in the bin, settings changed, stuff moved around. Even without admin password you can do a bit of damage.

Took a while to clean up and get it back to a working state.

    rant over. :pac:

... The child account btw is excellent. Although for my wife I'm contemplating setting her up a locked down account where she can do her thing but the lil guy can't start messing stuff up.

very same thing could happen on a windoze box if you let a child loose within an admin account, and i can guarantee that it was easier to fix on the Mac than it would have been on a peecee. ;)

In system preferences you can click a lock icon to prevent changes being made without a password.

Finder is one of the best aspects of OSX in comparison to Windows imo.

Good work, Hobbes. Password protect screensavers of admin accounts while you're at it! :pac:

Finder can frustrate me at time. Really want tabs and the breadcrumb should be enabled by default.

It's often recommended that you shouldn't use an admin account as your main account. Even without children messing around, there are other security risks.

    Do this:

    - Create a new user. Name it "admin" and make it an administrator.
    - Logout of your current account, login to the new "admin" account and takeaway admin privileges from your main account.
    - Log back into to old account.

This will save you have to carry over files, settings, etc.

yea it would be easier but the kid would have a hard time trying to find the stuff to mess around. :) Worst he did on PC was clicked on some game online and saved it to taskmgr.exe

wasn't but I'll double check that. cheers. :)

My bad. Think that's what it's called in Explorer under Vista :o

In Finder: View --> Show Path Bar.

Support for SSH as a file system under 'connect to server' would be a wonderful addition as well.
