i just got certified as a silverlight master on experts-exchange. If I put that on my linkedin profile does it make me seem like a competent kinda guy, or a total twat, or both.?
Obviously I'll wear the t-shirt to any forthcoming interviews etc lol

Exxperts-exchange is a well-known forum for technical queries. They have a reward/ranking system where you get points for answering questions in specific areas, and give you full access for free etc. There's only two users with a rank in WPF & Silverlight at this time

I'd vote for competent rather than twat! - but I'm not sure if I'd put it on my Linked In profile.

Maybe it doesn't matter - but I'd imagine it takes a lot of time to answer enough questions to achieve your status, if I was a potential employer I'd wonder if you'd do it on my time.

Do you need to pay to receive points in that? I've answered and assisted answered a few questions on that - I'm a "Expert Limited Access" ?

You don't need to pay. You get free access if you score 3k points a month, and have at least 10k point in total. (You get up to 2000 points per answer).

    Ah, just found Zone Rank.

it appears I have 2600 this month, and 3320 in total across all zones.

Some people would view it that way I guess. You don't need to spend a long time on it to answer questions though - you usually either know the answer or you don't. This site would be far worse as a distraction to work tbh.
Microsoft award a few people MVP status (Most valuable personel) in different MS techs. This seems to be very beneficial. I think this is awarded for very large contributions to the community - ie: producing open source software, blogging about the tech, and posting on technical forums. All these are things that could be perceived as taking up work time - and could very well be doing so. But I couldn't see employers seeing someone was an mvp and reacting by thinking they mustn't spend a lot of time doing their work.
Obviously there's a huge difference between being made an mvp and getting an automatic award on experts exchange, but I still think it's a relevant/valid point.

Given the shady reputation/general notoriety of Experts Exchange for their exploitation of Google search results, I think it would put you closer to the "Twat" category. A smarter approach would be to register on a more respected website like StackOverflow.com and link to your profile on that.

I've seen references to this. I've even seen a firefox plugin to filter out experts-exchange from search results!
The impression I have is that people take exception to having to register to see solutions to queries. I've also seen people object to its commercial aspect. Are these the only reasons why some people have this sort of attitude about the site, or is there more to it?
Personally, if there isn't more to it that I'm not aware of, I'd see these as fairly frivolous complaints.

It's the general annoyance factor and loss of productivity as a result of having your search results polluted by a bunch of links to inaccessible content. The perception among techies is that websites like Experts Exchange are only one or two steps above spammers for gaming Google search results with shady SEO tactics. Of course all the information can be gotten for free anyway. But I guess there's always people on the net who will be willing to pay the stuff regardless.

It might sound frivolous to you. But most techies I know would disagree. I suspect it's going to be a net liability for you.

I've noticed that lately as well. That wasn't the case previously. Perhaps they learned a thing or two from their previous experience. There was of course another workaround where you could click on the Google cache on the results page in Google to display the full content.
