    Hi all,
this is my second thread in this forum in 2 days, I need advice again.

I'm 22, I'll be 23 in July, and have been insured since I was 18, except for a period from August 2008 until present. I'm female, I have a full license for over 3 years, have 0 points, and no convictions etc. and have never claimed.

I was insured as a named driver for over 2 years and on my own policy from August 2007 until August 2008. This policy in my own name cost €460 for 3rd party, fire and theft inc windscreen cover.

In August 2008 I was given a renewal quotation of €426.98. I didn't renew the policy as I was leaving the country the week it expired. The insurance company (I don't know if I can name it??) told me my no claims bonus was good for 24 months.

I'm moving back to Ireland in June and need to get the car NCT'd and taxed and called the insurance company for a new quote. They quoted me just under €570!!!:eek::eek: That's over a hundred euro more then what it was when I had no no claims bonus. I expressed my shock and said I was going to ring around other insurance companies and the girl offered me 10% off (to about €510) that but couldn't do anymore, she said she was giving me all the discounts she could.

It's too late this evening to ring around other companies, but the girl on the phone said that due to an increase in pay outs, premiums have increased accross the board.

I just can't believe a quote for the same person, on the same car, in the same circumstances, from the same company, has increased by 25% in 8 months. The only difference in any of the questions now is that now I can't say I've lived in Ireland all my life, when in August I could, but surely that couldn't explain it?

I'm going to get on the phone tomorrow to ring around to places, but can anybody give me advice on which companies to ring for cheaper insurance? I really feel I'm being ripped off, I'm no more likely to crash then i was in August.

Ring everyone. The golden rule, as with everything, is to shop around.

    Try some online quotes like:

    www.quinn-direct.ie

    www.its4women.ie

    www.123.ie

    www.insureme.ie

    www.brittoninsurance.com

I was going to suggest www.insure.ie but after looking at their criteria, one of them is: Residency and working in Ireland for the past 3 years.

I can't vouch for any of these or any limits or exceptions they impose but getting some quotes will at least give you an idea of other quotes while you are waiting to make some calls.

Well the car is only a 1 litre. It's a 2001 Ibiza. I would imagine if you were driving that , your insurance would be lower, I'd say.

I have every intention of shopping around but could do with recommendations as to where to start, the company I have been with would be reputed as being cheap, so I'm at a loss.

I just can't believe the increase, my Dad said he heard on the news that insurance was up 11% but from €427 to €570/€510 is a 33%/20% increase (i miscalculated in first post)

Definitely shop around. I paid €470 last year for full comp. I have a full licence for 12 yrs with no claims or penalty points. Got my renewal a month ago for €620. Rang around and got a quote for €330.

Sit down with the Golden Pages and work your way through all the insurance companies and a good selection of brokers. It's perfectly normal for quotes to be all over the place, each ins co has their own way of calculating risk.

hmmm. true. just did a comparison then...entered my age as 22 and that i had no points, mine was 769 euro. not trying to start an argument or anything, in case you think im just being a prick about it, i was merely being curious, and vaguely jealous of such low prices!

ottostreet, i never thought you were picking a fight, sorry if you thought that was a bitchy response, i was just saying why my insurance is lower... well it's not low if you are earning as little as me at the moment, but that's not One Direct's fault.(Hope I'm allowed say the name).

Thanks all, i guess I'll have to buy some credit and start calling insurance companies, it has just occurred to me that they probably won't be open until Tuesday, so I'll be busy online until then. I'm still in shock over this jump up in price, I probably would have been better off renewing it in August even though I haven't been home much, but considering I put myself as a named driver on my mother's car over Christmas etc. I might have been better off:(

Somehow I think premiums will be raised to fill a certain 2 billion euro gap in a certain 'Mr.Quinns' pockets...

    http://www.sertus.ie/brokers.asp

see if there is a sertus broker near you.

Different companies have deals on certain times, a good broker will have most up to date info,

as a parent of 2 daughters & 1 son all under 23, believe me i have made many calls to brokers.
