Post workout sugars

Due to sporting committments at present, I do cardio type training in the morning five days a week, and a short weights session of varying intensity approx 5-6 afternoons a week.

From my own knowledge, and advice I've received from coaches, I take protein and sugars post workout. As I workout so often, I feel I am taking in a lot of sugar. I know it's necessary to provide energy to the tired muscles, but could consuming this much sugar have any effects on my long term health, blood sugar leves (diabetes) and so on ?

I just like to weigh up the pros and cons of what I'm doing with long term health and gauage whether I want to take the risks or not. Also, my second question is - Are there any other alternatives to sugar that would better, or any whole foods that I could eat which would be as good post workout.

Any comments / help would be appreciated - thanks
