durace, carbon stem, seatpost, forks, mavic wheels, looks in decent nick,

or better paying the extra 600 / 700 for a boardman?

Nice, GT road frame, something a bit unusual. How old is it? DA 9 speed? Looks in good nick, 300-400 would be a good deal I reckon.

id say its about 5 to 7 years old which is getting on a bit but like i said looks to be in very good nick, durace9 as far as i can tell, unusual frame for a roadbike alright, had a gt mountain bike before which was decent enough but not sure how well the frame would translate for the road.heres another pic,

mainly do off road but am looking at picking up a road bike for the odd spin so 1ooo would be my upper limit or anything under that is obviously better but still want to pick up something of reasonable quality.

Maybe a 2001 GT ZR? Dunno which variant.

Looks a bit ugly in silver compared to those other pics. Personally wouldn't want to pay €400 for that.

High-end stuff can be expensive to fix if it goes wrong - check the shifters are in perfect order.

Wouldn't be keen on spending that money on an 8 year old bike (if Lumen is right) either, personally if €1000 was my budget I'd look at spending that rather than lusting after something else in 6 months time

The low end GT frames used to have a reputation for being an extremely harsh ride - when I was buying my first road bike I test-rode one (comparing with entry level from Cannondale, Specialized and Bianchi) and I didn't like it much. But if it has Dura Ace on it, it's probably not one of the low end machines so might be better, and one man's harsh is another man's stiff...can you ride it before you buy it?

thanks for the feedback, overall i think the consensus is that its not so great an idea,
i did have problems with an oldish bike before where i had to get new campag shifters from ebay which cost more than the bike so i know what your saying with said difficulties, didnt realise same applied for DA,

1000 is my upper limit which i know isnt a lot for a decent bike but after spending around 1500 on my mtb in the last year really cant justify spending more than that so trying to find a good second hand deal if possible to save me some cash,

will keep on the lookout so,

might be way off the mark but what about the "Lidl" bike thats going on sale at the week end €899 I think. Have absolutely no clue about bikes but looking at a few of the threads on this, it might represent good value
