    On average.

I find data usage is something newbies have trouble getting their heads around, so I thought it might be an idea to start a thread and see what people are doing, and how much data it consumes.

So, something like the following, just to see how it works.

    Here's my data usage:

Phone: iPhone 1st Generation (EDGE, not 3G)
Data allowance: €10 per month, 250Mb with Meteor
Average data user per month: 200Mb
Applications used: Streaming radio, mobile Boards.ie, general mobile site browsing, occasional instant messaging

    Phone: Nokia N95
Data allowance: €10 per month, 1GB with 3
Average data user per month: 4-5GB (3 don't seem to give a crap, making their 10GB add on redundant :P)
Applications used: boards, googling, fring, porn, youtube, porn, Bart, Cabbage, porn, gmail app, google maps w/gps (beats the nokia one hands down), slingplayer and occasional porn

    Nice idea Tom .. :)

I'm using a Nokia n95 8GB. At the moment I'm jumping networks like a yoyo.

    - Mainly use my phone for email (IMAP 2 email accounts using inbuild client).
    - web browsing (mobile skinned forums - Boards being one) using Opera MIni and inbuilt browser
    - occasional Slingbox usage
    - Google Maps (not often, but enough)
    - random other apps that may require a web connection but nothing major.

I've used about 10MB this month so far. I'm using the 250MB data bundle on O2 billpay at the moment.

Previously used 19c / MB ISP on Vodafone prepay.

Before that was Meteor ISP @ 99c / Day.

So far I'm leaning toward the Vodafone one being best in terms of overall value (as O2 bill doesn't have the free SMS), but we'll see how things go.

Are you on bill pay or PAYG? If its on bill pay will they not just charge you for the extra automatically or do they monitor at all?

How much data usage would Google Maps be for a shortish session? Eg, checking the route from Stephen's Green to Heuston station or something small like that.

I'm using a 3g iPhone on o2 billpay. I use around 15mb of my 1gb monthly allowance as the bulk of my usage is over wifi as I have added my phone to both my home and work networks.
Most of my data downloads are accrued from web browsing, mainly boards.ie and I have three email addresses running.
Also, I do spend a fair bit of time on youtube but it's bloody irritating that o2 3G prevents you from downloading any file bigger than 10mb (I mean WTF ?)

As a matter of Interest Tom, what radio stations do you stream and what application do you use ? Been looking into it myself lately for the iphone.

I always use 250mb, it's SO difficult to stay within their puny data limits e.gif

    E51
less than 1mb per month. use mostly wifi for making calls, emails. sometimes IM

used to get the 1GB thing before, would use a few 100mb with the phone connected to my laptop but i'd usually make sure to use the last of the bandwidth by seeding a torrent at the end of the month.

    Phone N82.
Data allowance 3's cash saving tenner for a gig PAYG.
Monthly Usage c. 400 MB but there's no real way of knowing with 3.
    Applications used
Native Nokia music player and Real player for podcasts, videos and radio streaming. Heavy Opera Mini and some Skyfire for browsing. Gmail client for S60. Some Google maps. Youtube S60 client. The mighty Cabbage.

Will jump on to the first plan that gives me a USABLE amount of data plus some free minutes for 20 ish a month.

Not for me. I'm using a non-3 handset and accessing My3 via the Hutchkey link.

    I use Wunderradio.

The stations I stream include 2fm, Today FM and Phantom. All provide a 32Mbits stream, which is fine. Spin, however, is a 128Mbits stream which is simply not usable over EDGE.

I'm on PAYG and they don't monitor. The add on is supposed to expire once it runs out but it has only ever expired on me when the time ran out. I have verified it by downloading over 1GB in one go and waiting for the add on to expire - it didn't

If you do a fully fledged logon to my3 you can see data used. For me it seems to be a bit less that expected

    I'm on Meteor with an E71 and the 250MB add-on for €9.99

Only moved from 3 recently, usage is about 25Mb per month - light emailing, browsing - most data via wifi on E71 at home and work.

Wow. That is class. So you are getting mobile broadband for a tenner per month. I wonder if vodafone would do this, but I am too scared to try it out as they may rape me. I'm on the tenner a month 1GB ISP promo add on.

Is that usage a once off or regular monthly usage?

Also do you stream music or video with slingbox? I would have thought 3G is to laggy for video. I have never tried this as my upload at home is too ****e.

Cheers dude, I'll have to get that application it sounds like it's way handy.

It's regular usage. I stream tv with the slingbox. It can get a bit laggy but it buffers so unless it lags for a very long time you don't miss anything, you're just a bit behind the live broadcast. It's watchable anyway

I wouldn't attempt it on vodafone if I were you

Em..... so has anyone's monthly data usage jumped these days compared to 2009? :-D

Monthly average mobile data usage now for me is 7-8Gb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭GIMP

I probably average 15/16gb of data monthly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Arbie

Mobile data use on phone is ~2GB but then I use 45-50GB on wifi. As a household we use 250GB+ a month wifi for all devices. Which doesn't include work wifi use. We would consider ourselves moderate users...
