Out of Town deliveries

    Hey guys,

Right apologies if this is the wrong place but I dont know where to put it! I got a VM on my phone earlier from some guy saying he had a package for me which was sent to Galway for me - he said to the address but it was the wrong one....like the wrong number but the right estate. Anyway he gave me the mobile number of the driver who I rang when I got home from work at 6.30 and he was like "yeah I have a package for you, give me a call back at 9pm and I'll get your address off you"

And I said to him well what company are you and he told me out of town deliveries - I googled them and I cant find anything about them!

Im confused and a little freaked - like where the hell would they have got my mobile number???

My Mam reckons it sounds really dodgy and says not to call them back...

    What do you guys think??

Did you order anything recently, from Amazon maybe? That would explain why he had your number.

I would actually instruct him to leave the package at your local Post Office tomorrow morning, so you don't have to give him your address. Say you're spending the night at a friends.

I havent lived at my Galway address since last October though!!

So if I did order anything.... then its a bit late coming!

I agree it sounds a bit strange.
I can't be certain if I've heard of this crowd.
My brother lived in Dublin and always ordered stuff off the internet but was afraid to take deliveries there, so he used to give my address and mobile number instead. It happened a couple of times that I wouldn't answer, and the company would leave a VM stating they left the parcel at a Post Office or Petrol Station.
Maybe a friend or relation did this and used your name because they know you're reliable, but forgot you were no longer at that address?
I think I would ring them back at 9.30 - if they refuse to leave it at a PO then you'll know if you have a right to be suspicious.

Right rang the number back. Wouldnt give me any information. Said they couldnt leave it at the PO cos they wouldnt accept it. Wouldnt tell me where he got my number from either. Sounds well dodgy. I told him that I wouldnt give him my address over the phone and he said they would send it back and tell them I wouldnt accept it!

Sounds dodgy. Can you give them a work address to deliver the package to?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭kelle

    You did the right thing.
You'll be curious to know what it was now, but better to safe than sorry. If it's genuine, I'm sure you'll hear from the person who sent it to you in due course.

I think you are right to leave it,OP.
Was the delivery man saying that he would actually deliver the package tonight,if you had given your address to him?
I don't know of many who do that, tbh.

Yeah I was saying there would be no one here during the day, as he was like well i can deliver it tonight or up to 9pm tommorrow night if you want...

Never tell someone over the phone that your house will be empty during the day.
Just say in future that it's not suitable for you to accept a delivery at that time, or it is not convenient for you.:)

Sh1t I never thought of that....But I didnt give him my address so its all good.....I hope!!

Yeah, that's a good thing, but they did get your number so just be aware.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭kittensoft1984

Well the more I think about it....they could have got it from the whoever was sending the package...?

thats effectively telling them the place will be empty, though.

it's unlikely that someone would be at hone but unable to spare 30 seconds to open their door.. (unless they're ill and unable to get to teh door)

Im freaking out now! Though I didnt give the address and its easy enough to get a phone number....not so easy to get an address Id imagine! I hope!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,859 ✭✭✭✭Sharpshooter

Would any friends or relatives give out your number though?
It just seems strange that they wanted personal info from you(address) but refused to meet you halfway and tell you where they got your number.

Well ive texted my old landlord in Galway to see but Im really particular about my phone and he knows that so I doubt he would have given it out before asking me!

Not really, you could be a shift worker and not want interruptions or you might actually work from home and could do without the distraction.

Well if your old landlord knows you are particular about who has your number then so do family and friends I would imagine.
So, do nothing and see if someone contacts you about it again.
    Let us know though,won't you?:pac:

thats true i suppose, but tbh if i heard that from someone i think the most likely scenario would be that the place would be empty.

OP, i really dont know what to say, it soudns strange.

have you asked him who the parcel is from?

or ask him to deliver to your work address?

maybe it was a surprise barber shop quartet and they refused to be left at the post office - wouldn't blame them tbh!

on a serious note though, that would FREAK me out, I would be dying to know but I'm a serious conspiracy theorist (is that a word) so I wouldn't have given them my address. Did they have your name?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭kittensoft1984

Yeah I asked them who it ws from and he said it was out in the "van".

Ive just started in a new job and I dont know the situation with getting stuff delivered so dont really want to go there yet!

Yeah they had my full name and my address in Galway!! Thats what mental!

was it a mobile number you rang back? did you google the number? try that (use on ireland search!!!) I'm sure your job wouldn't mind you taking a delivery as long as it's not huge - although you've no idea what it is......

God I'm dying to know what's in the damn package!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭kittensoft1984

So am I!!!! I googled the number and the name of the company and nothing has come up!!! Well he says he will send it back and say I wont accept it so Im sure I will be contacted by someone soon!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭kelle

Did he offer to leave it anywhere but a PO? Maybe there are problems leaving it with a PO.

he wasn't very helpful saying it was out in the van, when he knew you were apprehensive he should have made an effort to locate it and tell you something about it.

I'm bloody curious to know what's in the package too!

He said that he would have to drop it to the house cos it was a private delivery company.....

My husband said you should have told him you would meet him at the local barracks!

To be fair, a lot of the larger courier companies subcontract their work out to much smaller companies.

Invariably your mobile number is usually on a package that is courier delivered.

Are you positive that it might not be from a competition you may have unwittingly entered. That happened me recently.... I ended up having a years supply of shampoo delivered cos my name was on some data base and i was picked via random selection.

I have no idea what to do with all the shampoo:rolleyes:

dont worry about it really. yea it could be a good way to get a mailbomb in the door but its a bit far fetched

this is what happens when they digg through the rubbish you didn't destroy...

or sign up for stuff you see in adverts " win a green card or Australia for a year "

You could always just ask them to leave it at their depot for you to collect......????

Could be that stalker you thought you'd given the slip turning up again after all these years.

    Remember me him?

They don't seem to be registered with the CRO so could be a "cash in hand" delivery company.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,313 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

The OP hasn't post since last night, so I think its fair to assume the delivery guy got to her in the end.
