Which BMW engines are 4 cylinder and which are 6? Thinking of looking for a coupe and would prefer a 6! Any opinions?

Looking at circa '00 and '01 by the way

The newer 320 (2.2) and up are 6 cylinder. The 320d (both variants) are 4 cylinder.

    320 (petrol), 323, 325, 328 and 330.

Just switch the engine on and you'll know. 6 cylinder models have a slightly different kidney shaped grill to lesser models.

318Ci is the only 4 cylinder petrol 3 Series coupe afaik.

Sorry what are you talking about mate?
No way to tell by watching the front of a bimmer if she is a 4 or 6 Cyl.
    Grills are exactly the same

Your right about the grill being the same size but there is a difference in that the verticle vents on the grilll of the bigger engined cars are chrome:

Yeah right but nowadays only way to tell is to open the bonnet, since so many people do change the grills and even badges.

Those vents can be bought online

Depends of the pack you have. Many e46 6 Cyl came from factory with chromed grills.

You've a good memory Lex! My prob is that I'm leaving college in May and starting a job in August. I want a car thats fun and enjoyable to drive. The plan for now is to spend approx 6,500 and save for the Alfa in approx 3 years. Actually kinda looking at the MiTo GTA and thinking!!

A 6 cylinder coupe, bought new, here in Ireland would have chrome slats, and black slats for a 4 pot.

Loads of people remove them, was the very first thing I took off my 328ci and my M3 - stuck on a set of 4 pot ones black centred ones. Chrome is evil.

If you can at all afford a 6 cylinder version buy it!

They're not expensive in the first place: most people don't want big engines. in-law changed from 318ci to 323ci. 323 lighter on juice !

Wrong again bout what dude? I was not wrong here, not sure what you mean by your "again"?
I know how to recognise the specificities of a bimmer thank you.
Not all BMW 6 Cyl have double tip as you seem to be saying...That was prominent on e46 but that's all.

    There are different variations:
round, oval, twin, both sides (335i), double both sides (M3), etc.

That's twice in one thread, I think you still have a bit to learn regarding the 'specificities' of a BMW.

Dude I don't who you think you are to insult me like this with no reason and obviously nothing to back up what you are saying but that is very annoying.

I was dead right by saying you can't tell a bimmer is a 4 or 6 cyl by watching the front of the car, and especially its grill, of course I am, where do you come from?

I was right on both occasions, and even if I was wrong, I would appreciate a simple and gentle remark, I always stand corrected and I am happy to improve my knowledge.

Well I don't need to take it easy, I am a very cool guy, I am just answering insults from some clueless members who have nothing else to do than being aggresive and irrespectuous :D

Now you decided to agree with Anan1 so obviously you are wrong as well.

Was thinking exactly the same, absolute beaut except for the alloys... Was hoping to try and convince the guy to take my trade in over the weekend, I could do a roadtrip to Kerry for that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 111 ✭✭vinruane

Hmmm that would be a nice buy alright, don't worry cian, I won't take your baby! Not buying till next month anyway. Have to get out of college first!

    Any probs with these engines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

Ah yeah, I'm not even waiting 'till before I graduate, hehe..
The engines are seriously solid, one of the best out there - don't recall anything..
Wishbones and other suspension problems can tend to surface due to **** Irish roads though..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

The general rule of thumb with a 6 cylinder engine'd 3 Series is that the grills were chrome, and the exhaust had dual tips. But because both the exhaust and grills can be bought and attached to a 316, you shouldn't use those as identifying marks.

Open the bonnet, and count the cylinders if you're not sure if it's a 318, or 320. The engine note will definitely give it away ... it's sexual! :D

Any of the wheels here would look good on it & make an immediate difference:

If you were changing the wheels, I'd also change the gear lever. The standard one for me's far too long, it's like stirring porridge changing gear. You can buy the shorter M Sport lever for around 50 Euro, plus it's brand new as well, which is always good when you buy a second hand car. My mate who changes BMW's every year or so changes the steering wheel and gear lever as soon as he buys a car, he always wants to be the first person touching the controls. Go fig.

Cheers for the heads up, sounds like you can't go too wrong at €50.. Hopefully he'll entertain my trade in, it's the only non-gold coloured reasonably priced one in the country at the moment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 111 ✭✭vinruane

ya i've noticed that too, why oh why would you buy a gold BMW?!!

    Edit: or gold anything really!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

I have a 320ci as my daily driver and it's fantastic to drive. Lots of power when you need it, but I think it's wasted on me as I rarely rev :) Designed more for open roads than dublin city start stop traffic though

Drinks petrol like nothing else. It's heartwrenching seeing the fuel gauge move downwards after 10 miles when you've just filled up the tank!

Regardless I knew that when I bought her :D Just remember that with e46 models younger than 2001, many were affected by subframe tearing in the rear. Make sure yours is checked before you buy it.

Oh, and make sure to get as many extras as you can. Sports leather, climate control, better hifi, OBC etc. Not only is it better for you, it's better for resale.

I've seen a few e46 with e90 wheels, I was only suggesting it to be slightly different. These were wheels being advertised in Ireland, so I thought OP might go for them. Personally I would go with a set of Alpinas myself, they would be nice on that colour car. Might be an expensive option though, could cost nearly as much as the car if you got them new!! A bit of 2nd hand research woudl be needed.

Sometimes the later model wheels can look good an previous model:

You'd get decent Alpina or ACS reps with tires for €900 or so.

I've never been a fan of Alpina alloys myself, or Alpina styling in general TBH - it's more what they do to the engine etc that I'd take, and leave the aesthetics..!
Anyway that dealer in Kerry ^^^^^^ wasn't willing to entertain my trade in, too old or something.. *shrug* Please god SOMEBODY buy my car!
