I hear on the grapevine that Renault will be starting their own scrappage scheme tomorrow, up to 5 grand on some cars. I'd say many more brands will be there too.

It's not really scrappage if that's the case, it's just giving discount on the new car, which most manufacturers are doing now. Ford were advertising 3k off RRPs today in the Examiner, so that's a 3k scrappage deal by another name effectively, unfortunately, it's just a name change for an existing method of doing business, and people will assume it's some new fancy deal.

EDIT : Just to clarify, you could get the same deal in many cases if you had no trade in at all just by negotiating discount.

Opel were offering 3k scrappage back in February. Plenty of good deals on 08 cars. We availed of one of the deals and her rid of herself's banger so we were very happy with it.

Not true.... From what I could sumise from my conversation it seems that you will have the regular discount to work with plus an extra 5 grand scrappage. He used a Scenic as an example and in that case it would be around 8 grand if the dealer was to use his full margin plus the scrappage allowance. a car must be traded in soI presume this is to stop Irish dealers now blowing UK dealers out of the water. The scrappage amount plus the trade in must be stated on the order form or Renault wont pay out.

well, my 02 Mazda 2.0d is sitting and waiting for the right deal to come along, and I'll unload it with a heart and a half :D

Come to think of it: if someone wants something to use on such a scheme, let me know.........

Look, Renault have always been known for discounting their new cars and artificially beefing up their trade prices with margins. plus a lot of brand distributors have offered "cash back" deals that are separate to any deals done by the dealer.

Renaults with big discounts. nothing new, unless they're giving another 5k on top of all the margin they already have on the car, or the 5k doesn't just apply to something like a VelSatis or Espace.

this seems like a slight variation on an offer that lots of other brands already have.

(more than likely) Nothing new here.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Citroen and like I said 5 grand on top of the regular discount...thats an extra 5 grand. To re cap , all of the normal discount and ( wait for it ) 5 thousand more euros off :D

If only they were still making them. Then I would head down with my Xantia and pick up a nice new 2.2 diesel auto.(I'm sure I could steal money somewhere :))

    A new one?

I did come across an 07 that was new early last year. Was thinkign about it instead of the Scenic we eventually went for. If it hadnt been a base model 2.0 petrol I'd be driving it today.

Almost had the missus convinced to let me get an Avantime too, but them all being 02 made it harder. She wanted somethign newer. Boo urns.

    No, not new, s/hand.

I think they've given up advertising it at this stage, and it's in the back of the shop.

I know they're odd, but they still seem a fine car.

Well I agree that there is nothing new here. What has happened is Renault had a cashback offer that was supposed to end 16th february. Then it was extended to 28th Feb, then to 15th March, then 31st march. If they are now bringing in a scrappage scheme it's just another name for cashback. Calling it scrappage makes it seem new and different whereas continually extending the cashback deadline was turning it into a bit of a joke.

There were some big discounts availble with the cashback. Cashback + dealer discount was resulting in 8.5-10k being knocked off the list price of new Lagunas. I was offered several new cars with these discounts, it works out at a discount of around 30%. I was also offered a "new old stock" unregistered Laguna II for around 45% off its final price. Still too much for a model that has been obsolete for 1.5 years

Seriously, who cares what they call it or why they are doing it? Surely this is a good thing for the customer and makes the brand more competitive against the option of going to the UK or up the North.

You still end up with a Renault at the end of it though :(

Scrappage, discount, cashback, trade-in booster, 0% finance - call it what you like. It's funded by the manufacturer so it boils down to discount - end of story.

Remember that the original scrappage deal in the 1990s was funded by a reduction in VRT , i.e. the government.

So I agree with colm - nothing new here.

As was pointed out above there's nothing particularly new or innovative here - it's just re-marketing the discount. I'd expect most mainstream car manufacturers are retaining their list prices at the same level (or increasing them slightly) but offering aggressive discounts through the dealers to clear a massive stock build up that is depreciating rapidly.

So they are going to cut out the consumer and drive the cars from the factory straight to the scrapyard....... works for me.:D

Keeping list prices high also keeps the VRT relatively high, discouraging people from impprting the same model.
