    Hi All,
As mentioned earlier in another thread, there's a user trial going on in college at the moment for a project called Metakall. Metakall does authentication and metering for wireless internet access, meaning that using it in college gets you access to the internet over your netbook/laptop/mobile/etc (not that this is anything new, at least for the laptops - though the mobile users might be interested). Right now we have clients for Windows XP/Vista/7 and J2ME for mobile phones, and we're working on clients for MacOS, for iPod Touch/iPhones (though we're limited there to jailbroken models for the moment because Apple won't allow background apps) and for Linux. Once the client has been installed onto your device you will be able to connect to Metakall-enabled hotspots distributed around the college campus (and in Halls and St.James and Santry). The Windows client may be configured to automatically detect and connect to Metakall access points (or you can do it manually).

    s60_client.png

We're hoping to get people to sign up to the trial, hence this post.

    MetakallUSBKey.jpg

Trial users will receive a USB key which contains the Metakall client (though you can also download it from the Metakall website), a headset for making VOIP calls and a VOIP client configured to use a pre-configured account provided by freespeech.ie. All equipment may be kept after the trial has ended. In addition, any unique bugs reported to Metakall (there's a page on the website for this) will be rewarded with a €1 bounty once the bug has been reproduced by the development team (yeah, I know, it's not a lot, but it's a college project and there's a recession on :D ).

If you'd like to sign up for the user trial, please go here:
    http://metakall.dsg.cs.tcd.ie/index.php?action=signup&section=trial

If you'd like to collect your USB key and headset, please go to room 1.17 in the Lloyd building and collect them there.

And if you'd like to learn more, please take a look around the website here:
    http://metakall.dsg.cs.tcd.ie

(And if you're really interested, you can follow development stuff on twitter)

There was an error in the bug report page that's been fixed now. Please re-submit your report.

I just tested the signup system and it appears to be working properly. Be sure to check your spam folder!

I checked the database that the bug report page and there's no sign of it - I think your report got eaten by the bug we fixed on that page, can you resubmit it?

    Yup. Already did.

Cool, got that. We think it's from using an earlier version of the client, but our J2ME guy is looking at it now.

Can I use this service to download Animal porn anonymously over the college network? If not why not.

Thats sorted, the bug existed in the first release but was squashed a few hrs later when i discovered it.

Just re-download the client and it should work for you.

I'm guessing you mean torrenting, and no, you cannot because:
    1. You're still going through the TCD proxy when you use the net over metakall
    2. You can only use ports 80 and 443 (and VOIP), and most importantly,
    3. College don't allow it and we get our internet from them; if you want to argue that point, the email address is helpdesk@tcd.ie and have fun :D

Hey just to say have installed on n95 8gb and is working perfectly, no problems in setting up just follow instructions in email.
So can now use phone on the wireless network in college, which previously wasn't able to do, it gets my thumbs up.

Yeah, same problem with me. I think I'd initially tried it the day it was put up last week. Java app seems to be working ok now but it's not accepting my serial number. Could be because I had initially signed up before christmas and hadn't used it since. Tried signing up again for a new one but it wouldn't accept my email address.

    Any ideas?

    Hang on a tic Ronny...

...okay, you should be able to reregister now.

    :pac:

    ----

Does this incur any kind of performance hit? Having a background client just for an internet connection seems rather bloatware to me.

We've not measured it Baza, but we've never noticed it ourselves in testing either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,297 ✭✭✭Ron DMC

Invalid serial number apparently, even after reinstalling.

Are you required to meet the network requirements for ISS before you can use this trial?

Downloaded and installed the app earlier.
Opened it up to see what it was like and all was working fine.

Just tried to open it again there and in getting 'Unhandled Exception. Close Application?'
Nothinig changed on my phone at all, no other apps open.

Oh, and I did get that email. I marked it as read amongst other stuff from Facebook

what version of the client do you have?
0.7.3 won't accept a newly generated serial, but 0.7.4 (which is currently up) will

I haven't encountered this on any of the test phones. Try reboot your phone, and if that doesn't work uninstall and reinstall.

Make sure you install from the jad file and not the jar file. There is a required cert in the jad file.

All installed and ready to go.
Just need to get in range of tcdwifi, heading for the dart station now...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,297 ✭✭✭Ron DMC

Internet working perfectly. Can't seem to connect to blueface over sip. Though I'm not sure if I have the right tcd port or proxy settings saved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

You won't be able to connect to blueface Ronny, SIP's only open out to freespeech.ie (the department is rather conservative when it comes to opening up ports to the outside world, which is an understandable stance when you remember they have a few thousand customers to provide 24/7 service to :D ).

Was there something about getting an account with free credit on freespeech?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Yeah, when you sign in online it creates an account for you with freespeech.ie and there's some free credit in there (it's not a lot, but you know - college budgets :( ).

When you signup on the metakall website.
    Any username details etc?
We thought that freespeech.ie was emailing welcome messages; seems that that isn't happening (we'll fix that on our end). If you go to freespeech.ie's login page and enter your @tcd.ie email address into the password recovery box, they'll send you an email with the password in it.

Seeing as it's a java app, there is no sis file. Jar or jad file on the other hand are located here. Make sure you use the jad.
