Wondering which type of drumkit to get

    Hey guys,

I've been making the most of my old, battered drumkit for a while now, but I think the time is coming to invest in something a little more upmarket. (Mainly due to the shame of other people using my kit at gigs). I'm leaning towards picking up something in the €500-€600 range, second-hand - possibly a Pearl Export kit, if its in good condition. Having said that, I could be persuaded to buy something new, if the right deal was available.

The trouble I'm having is that I know Pearl have re-named most of their series recently, and I'm not really familiar with the differences between them (the Pearl blurb would have you believe that everything was legendary). Between Export / Vision / Masters / Excellence / etc, there seems to be a wide price variation, but not much information on the practical differences. Obviously, I'm considering other manufacturers too, but I'm even less familiar with their ranges.

Frankly, I'm an easy man to please - I would play pots and pans, if it came down to it (as evidenced by my current shambolic kit), so really, I'm looking for something with a good all-round tone. I'm fairly happy with my current snare and cymbals, and I'm just looking for toms, bass, and kick pedal. I play in an indie-pop band (The Crayon Set, shameless plug), but I generally like to keep my options open in terms of a good rock sound - I listen to a lot of stuff like Placebo, Glassjaw, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, etc., and I'd like to have a kit that can vaguely emulate the same tones.

So, if anyone has any advice or suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them!

Check out the lads up in Custom Irish Drums.
    http://www.customirishdrums.com/special_offers.html
There is a nice Gretch on the end of the page, if i had €700 euro i'd have it. There's also a dDrum kit there for €699 that wouldnt be bad.

They also have a great sale going for the month of April too.

If not that, check out Mapex. I have an M Series kit at the minute that i picked up on my travels in the UK not too long ago for around €550.

    Do you need cymbals too?

No, I'm not looking for cymbals. Really, all I need is the shell pack and a kick pedal.

While the Custom Irish Drums stuff is relatively nice-looking, I'm still more inclined to buy second-hand. I figure that if the kit is in good condition, I can get a better kit for the same money, if you know what I mean. Still, I'd be interested to hear people's opinions on which kits give particular tones. What differences should I expect to hear between plywood / birch / maple kits? Backing this up with example bands / songs would be particularly nice.

Thanks for the tips so far anyhow.
