It seems that you won't need to be on jobseekers for a year before being eligible for the back to education allowance. (You could get it after 9 months in some cases)

once again things like this piss me off,if you are working you woundnt be entitled to a college grant, but yet if you decide to not bother working, and live off the taxpayer they will pay you go through college,so basically they are telling you go on the dole

Back to education isn't a grant, its an allowance paid at the same rate as jobseekers

Anyone know what the story is on free fees? Have they been abolished/criteria changed?

Is it true that the Back to Education applies to all undergraduate courses but only certain post grad courses like the H.Dip.

I am looking at studying a Masters. I think Masters' Courses are ineligible to get funded for from BEDA. Is this correct?

    Again for the umpteenth time............

THERE IS A RECESSION GOING ON WHICH HAS RESULTED IN MANY PEOPLE LOSING THEIR JOBS.
IT IS A GLOBAL PHENOMENON WHICH MEANS THAT UNLIKE THE SITUATION WHICH OCCURED IN THE '80s EMIGRATION IS NOT THE ANSWER AND EDUCATION IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do some people not get this?

If anything, leaving the BTE allowance alone will hopefully encourage more people to go to college. Educating our people is a really really good way out of this, cutting this scheme in any way would be insanity. Glad they didnt but the fees thing is still a killer.

He/She will look to see if...

    you are over 23
been on jobseekers benifit/allowance for over 9 months
been out of full time education for over 5 years

From what a gather, they will not entertain you until you have secured a place in a college/uni. They want it in writing before you can proceed.

    Hi All,

Wondering if somebody can help? can the job facilitator decide if u can get BTEA if he recommends you for a course. im similar to post above, im on job seekers since october, however FAS recommended i do industrial automation course. I have an engineering degree already, and have been accepted to masters course, engineering again. I will most probably by the skin of my teeth make the higher education grant from the VEC for my course fees only, and the lady recommended i pursue the BTEA. however on more research ive noticed its only H.Dip or for teachers. Is there no other way of getting this BTEA?

if this is the case, is there any other financial support. Like most other people, I have bills to pay and i wouldnt be able to afford to do my masters if this is the cae. i would find it bizarre that the government/social welfare/FAS would rather i collected the dole instead of furthering my education to increase my chances of coming off the live register. any help would be immensly appreciated as i am really beginning to get confused by all this.

    Thanks

I'm working full time for the last 20 months, after 9 months on the dole. I want to go back to Uni next year for Sept 2012. I don't know if I can get this allowance, but I'll need to get it to actually go back to college full time.

I can't work part time in my job as the hours wouldn't work with Dublin City and Maynooth to move between. I live in Lucan.

I don't want to essentially be penalised for the fact that I've taken up minimum wage employment and come off the dole after 9 months. I'd like to think I did a better thing to get off the dole and start working again, however, I'm worried that I won't qualify as I've had a job. This seems unfair.

Does anyone know if I won't be considered eligible because I've been working?

    Thanks
