Its the 987 2.7, in the colour id want.

However with the price cut (it seems a new 2.9 is circa €60k) see here http://www.carzone.ie/search/Porsche/Boxster/New-Gene/200914192383479/advert

what would a fair price for this on be?

the seller is happy to negotiate but id like to get a fair price in my own head.

its still around €35k to import similar from the uk, but is the irish price cut an isolated one?

27-ish? Thinking its four years old, and 60k new. Thats 45% of new price which is fair enough on an 05 IMO

He/She is as paranoid a parker as I am & it is always immaculate & polished looking. And they went for the 987 reg so they must have some clue about the marque.

if it were to end up in my ownership there would be more paranoid parking ahoy :D

as an aside myself and the missus went out to kildare village shopping centre at the weekend, normally when we go its half empty and i take one of 4 spots where no one can park beside you, imagine my horror when we got there and the place was jammed.

    picked a spot between a 911 and a 3 series coupe :o

Could you live with that interior Cyrus? Bit step down from the M3..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,470 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

well i havent sat in one yet, but seats aside the m3 interior is the very same as any other e46 3 series, and whiles its nice i wouldnt have said it was amazing ?

Don't mean this in any sort of a disrespectful way but are you sure this is the route you wanna take?? :D

2.7 is nice enough in the 987 but it's so "normal" inside and out compared to your M3 will you be happy with it?

Porsches are always going to be simple enough on the inside but the S model with the 19s, sat nav, phone prep etc makes it a bit nicer... this car to be more specific but even this isn't fully loaded. It was 60k plus when I looked at it about 3 months ago though. With cash in your hand you could get that down to 40k if you got him on a good day - it's been for sale for an age.

I was a bigger fan of the Boxster until I got an M3 - I'm just coming at it from that angle, put it that way. :)

I have to say the interior is nothing like the m3. Its a great car but I could never live inside anything like that after going from something with such a high quality cabin.

^^ That's an E92 interior, no? Still, I'd agree.. E46 M3 inside although same as bog standard 3 series inside still blows the boxster out of the water in that regard. Also, 2.7 boxster is a big step down from an M3 I'd have thought, maybe Boxster S a bit further down in the years would be a better buy?

im definately going to take a look at a few anyway mark, and apart from the wheels and exhaust the 2.7 looks the same as the S externally and im sure the interior is the same story?

    hi cian,

a 986s is 260 bhp, a 987 2.7 is 240 bhp so not a massive difference, also it will be a much different drive to the m3, i dont track my car and rarely utilised the full power of the m3, imo anything with over 180 bhp per tonne is plenty fast :)

Agreed. €40k for the '07 3.4 S is better value than €28k for the '05 2.7 imho. And performance wise, the 3.4 S is much closer to the M3. You will be disappointed going down more than 100BHP from the M3 to the 2.7!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,470 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

maybe so, but im not willing to spend 40k, esp not after that budget

also while its 100 bhp decrease its actually from 228 bhp/tonne to 188 :)

    and a different driving experience

Fair enough - a budget is a budget.

That said, I feel you might be disappointed owning a 2.7 987. Wasn't I right before about warning you off the Mk 4 Golf after the 156? ;)

I would agree. Having test driven both an E46 M3 and 987 S a few years ago, I eventually went for the Porsche. No contest for me in the end. Despite being less powerful, there was more of a sense of occasion with the Boxster. The low seating position, centre of gravity, build quality and visceral engine note sealed the deal. Not to mention the ability to drop the roof on a sunny day and listen to that flat 6 howl... The 987 is still as rare as hens teeth and unlikely to increase in number notwithstanding recent price reductions.

Honourable mention for the E46 though. My legs felt like jelly after that drive...probably down to the complete nutter BMW salesman who took me out in it ;)

Exactly. And I know the M3 is a great car - ye all keep tellin' me, after all ;) - but that sense of 'occasion' in a Porsche, is great. And, like it or not, there is never any doubt but that a Porsche is a Porsche. An M3 is often double-taked to make sure it's not a 318i ;):D

Remember, we're not talking logic here - this is a car we're talking about, so sometimes there just no room for logic. So spouting bhp/tonne etc is, at this level, in a land of traffic an 80 km/h speed limits........well, a bit ethereal, if nothing else......and it is nice to get into something that isn't a car modified to perform well (M3), but a car designed to perform well, and 'modified' to make it civilised.

+1 on the 987. Nice colour, too.

    And I do admire the stick-to-the-budget stance. I wish I did !! :o

The point in the post is that I think that anyone driving those cars looks like they're squashed into them. I'd not think they were quite as comfortable as an e46 m3.

I wasn't slagging Cyrus, just giving my view on the car. By "you're" I was meaning the "royal you're"

was in my mates brand new cayman s last night, plenty of room in there, what a machine

anyway, ive ditched the boxster idea, mainly becuase i wouldnt be into driving with the hood down which defeats the purpose,

so ive bought a z4 coupe instead ;)

    OH NO !

You've now managed to combine the worst of an M3 and Boxster - into one car !!

    Don't Do It - bring it back - it's not too late ! ! ! :D:D

don't agree about the hood thing, though - don't knock it 'til you've tried it ! Besides, you could've put a hard top on it........

I know at least one Porsche Specialist (Ray Northway in Reading) who recommends against buying a 2.5 Boxster due to reliability probs with that engine..

I suppose the Z4 isn't everyones cup of tea in fairness.

Btw there is a lot to be said for a convertible. I drove a 968 convertible from London to Cork a month or so ago. The weather was great, and cruising on the limit on the M4 with the stereo up and roof down was quite wonderful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,470 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

ah yeah im into the whole idea of floating around with the roof down, i just dont think i would, so i decided against getting a vrt

Very nice car Cyrus I have to say. Personally I may have been tempted towards a Z4 convertible but it would be a tough choice between the two as the coupe looks very well. I had a 2.0l z4(convert) for a day last year and it was a great fun,so the 3.0l should be excellent.

I completly agree. But thank god ya didn't get a softtop

I got the 350gt over the 350z for practical reasons i.e 4 seats and it looks beefier :)

Is that the colour you got? Have seen a few silver ones but that blue and the black ones look sweet.

of course, thats a key reason to go for the g35 over the 350 alright, i dont need rear seats so im sound for now :D

i got it in that blue alright, think its one of the better colours in it :)

yep, i was on to him about it,

he is firm on the 30k, but the car needs a major service (1k +), needs to be taxed immediately and needs to go through the nct for th first time, hence the price,

seller seems very genuine, however i think the car ive gone for being 2 years newer, faster, rarer is a better buy at the same price;)

Not mine I'm afraid. Boxster any day. And twice on Sundays. By far the superior roadster.

Exactly like the 968 in the pic, right down to the colour!

Not mine, but a relatives. He bought it from Northway, but wasn't able to bring it home so I did the honours. What a car, and for less than €7k (before evil VRT).

It is definately the best balanced car I have ever driven, and looks even better in convertible than coupe form (no offence intended! :)). I found the gear change took a while to get used to, but other than that just fantastic. The 3.0 felt almost like it should be in a train with the torque, you could pick any gear in the box and it would go like hell.
