Speaker choice?

After reading another thread, it got me thinking about amp speaker selection, amps with one 100watt speaker, and amps with two 50watt speakers. if two identical amp heads were connected to the two speaker setups, would there be much difference in tone, or any at all? i.e MG100 vs MG250 (only an example, cant think of a better quality amp with the same speaker choices)

my mate has a 110watt laney into one speaker, I have a 100Watt vox into 2 speakers, cant compare them as they are different makes of amps. I always thought the 2 smaller speakers would be better, but i am basing that on a half-stack, which will have 4 "small" speakers instead of one "big" one.

    mabey im just going mad!
    thanks!

Generally the bigger the speaker = more bottom end .
i.e. a 12" speaker will have more bottom end than a 10" (or smaller again!) speaker, and a 2x12 or 4x12 will increase that bottom end more, and provide a greater sound spread.
Also, though all things are subjective, many players will say a 1x10 has a quicker 'response' and the sound leaps out at you more than with a 12". Personally I've always thought a 4x10 set up sounds great, then again so does a 1x15. There aint enough 1x15 combos out there, Peavey do the only one I'm aware of (for guitar anyway).
