    Hi all,

Just looking for some advice as I'm thinking of joining. It would be my first time to join a golf club.

How is the course after the improvements - is the second 9 reopened yet?

What is the place like apart from the course in terms of competitions, clubhouse etc?

    Any other comments?

The main reason I have to join is that it is my nearest club.

    Thanks.

    T

    Hi Tom,

Played it a few times a few years back, prior to the changes. Haven't played it since unfortunately but I do remember it being a nice, friendly set-up. It's not the best course in the world, far too open and some pretty crap up-and-back holes but some decent ones too. I can only imagine any developments will improve the lay-out anyway.

I'm fairly sure they have a vibrant playing membership and also, the fact that it's very near you is a huge plus.

I'd say go for it. If there's anywhere else nearby you had in mind let us know and maybe we can give some comparisons.

I know a couple of members and have played it a number of times.
Its a nice friendly club with a good club atmosphere. I think the development work is a few months behind where they planned to be
at this stage but the improvements will give more shape to some of the holes. If you live local I would say go for it. There is no substitute for leaving nearby where you can really use your membership during summer evenings etc...

Rathcore is not far from Kilcock, it would be similar cost for membership I think. Don't know what the membership or atmosphere is like but its a good course, a bit short but it makes up for it with well placed hazards and layout.

    Cheers,

I did look at Rathcore. It would be about 20-22 mins drive from home as opposed to 6/7 mins to mins to Kilcock.

Also as a relative beginner I heard that Rathcore is a tough course. I don't know whether this would be too important though.

2nd 9 is opening in August. It has been delayed due to the weather. I heard last night that the work will be finished and the workers off the site in 8 weeks. The 9 that was done last year is a lot better after the improvements. The course will never be a masterpiece but a year from now, once all the changes have settled down, it should be a decent track.

Clubhouse is basic but adequate. Bar is lively at the weekends and when the big events are on. New caterer is Canadian (I think) and he has been getting good reviews.

The club enters most of the big interclub competitions. We haven't really got enough quality players to challenge for any titles as of yet though. The committee are working on this.

Club has a decent membership and the committee are very progressive. They've done some great work on the course and the general running of the club in the last few years. I suggest giving the office a ring and asking for a game. Tell them you are thinking about joining and they should facilitate you. Just remember that it's a work in progress and also that the greens have just been pole forked!

Did you look at Knockanally too, played it a while back and really liked the course, don't know anything about membership though.

Played Kilcock and have to say its a pleasant course. Althought it reads short on the scorecard theres a few par 4's which are really long. The index one is a god damn long hole, although into a decent breeze I hit a good drive and rescue and was still short, which in fairness with two good clean hits doesn't often happen, although I did get up and down for par! From what I can gather a lot of 'good' work has been carried out on the course. For the life of me I didn't get a putt all day, I couldn't read them to save my life, the greens (looked brand new) my playing partners confirmed are tricky at the best of times. I tripped up more on the short par 4's, simply not knowing what club to use off the tee or were really to place the ball. Also the rough was quite heavy, miss the fairway and you will be punished.

I would rate the course as better than Blackbush or County Meath respectfully. I went there not expecting a whole pile and was pleasantly suprised. Thursdays and Friday theres open for €15, a cracking price on a course well worth playing.

Having played this course twice in the last 8 days , I'd say its a very nice course , Plays long on some holes and has plenty of fairway bunkers to stop it becoming an up and down doddle ...
Greens a bit slow and very tricky to read at times , but also a great challenge ..
i like a course where there is somewhere decent to warm up both putting and chipping , Kilcock has this available , and also a couple of nets to hit a few irons/drives too . Clubhouse has everything you need showers , good food and very friendly staff ....

Nice and friendly course and a tough test too. New holes have added a lot to the course.

Yeah thats what I heard too, never played the old layout but I heard the greens were pretty flat and they introduced lots of new bunkers in the new layout.

For €15 on a Thursday or Friday, great value.

couldn't agree more .. fanatstic value

If the greens were flat before the makeover they sure did a fantastic job on them , played it twice and have got caught out on them a few times , A nice challenge all the same
