Dont buy this if you ever plan on "upgrading" to European maps. You can only upgrade country by country @ about €30 a pop and can't buy the entire European map for €50. No external memory slot. Get yourself a Garmin.

Sry, its the UK/ROI maps in Halfords. Exact same as the linked one to Xtravision, so get it there and save yourself a tenner!

This unit has been €99 or less since before Christmas.

There is a free map upgrade in the box regardless.

You can buy the full European maps version for €40-50 more.

The GB/IRL model has 1Gb internal memory, whereas the EU version has 2Gb internal.

Doesn't need an external memory slot as you can use TomTom Home software to manage your maps.

If you're going to Europe, swap maps using the software.

    Have you done this?

It was €115 on Thursday when i went into the store. Then it was reduced to €99 at the weekend. That's why I posted it up as a bargain.

I have not purchased the full European maps as I have no need for them.

I have purchased a map for France and have switched between the UK/IRL & FR maps.

Once you purchase maps they are stored and recognised by the TomTom Home software.

The free map update happens automatically when you first connect your unit. It's a one off update for whatever maps you purchased with the unit, not a perpetual thing AFAIK.

how much are the france maps?
do they get rid of uk/irl maps, sorry not really clued into sat navs.

I am not an expert either but looking to buy a Sat Nav.
I believe if you want French maps you are best to buy a sat nav with maps for all of europe built in. This seems like a good deal for a Garmin Nuvi 250W:

Its approx €113 delivered to Ireland (£102)

The version with a smaller screen (Nuvi 250) is £99 delivered

I took this baby for a spin to France last year, it worked really well. Gave notifications of all the fixed speed camera locations. :D

Tom Tom Irish maps suck. There are 10 year old roads not on it. A 15 year old roundabout here in town has an exit missing from it. I was sorry I bought one TBH. Apparently Garmin maps are much better. So I've been told. I do have the latest map.

When I looked at these a year ago, the TomTom One for Europe came with Navteq maps while the UK/Irish maps came with Teleatlas maps. Ironically the Navteq maps are far superior to the Teleatlas maps for Ireland, therefore at least back then you were far better off getting the European model then the Irish model!!!

I know it makes perfect sense.

We are not talking about the same thing. Of course you can purchase each country map and store on your computer and swap as you wish. But at ca €30 per map, all you have to do is buy 2 countries and you have already spent more than the europe wide map for €50.

Which is my point, you cannot upgrade to the European map. The One does not have the memory for it. V4 has 500mb of memory IIRC, not 1gb.

There is a 1Gb Western Europe map available for the TomTom One.

    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=2055444901

The 2Gb Europe maps which will not fit onto the ONE v3 have Central Europe on them also.

The 1Gb maps exclude Central Europe.

    Ok....

Point is now as in my original post you cannot load the Euopean map on to the latest Tom Tom One UK & ROI.

Xtravision are selling the V3 from the link which can accomodate the WE Map.

For info on what I am talking about (if someone else says it it must be true...)
    http://www.reviewcentre.com/review463649.html

Just stay away from One V4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭fdevine

I wasn't trying to confuse anybody, nor am I trying to save my point.

Just to be crystal clear - I have now got a full Western Europe 1Gb map running on my TomTom One Classic UK/ROI (v3), which has 1Gb internal memory.

Maybe we both weren't clear enough. WE map can be done easily on a v3/Classic, but as you point out not the new v4.

I wasn't aware that the newer v4 has less memory and you never stated which you were referring to.

Although I didn't clarify which unit I was referring to, I understood it to be the one linked to.

Just looked again, we are both actually right. The one in Halfords (V4) has 512mb and cannot accomodate WE map, the one in Xtravision (V3) has 1gb and can. All happy! :D
