To fix or not to fix? 99 Fiat Seicento

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a bit of advice about my car - its a 99 Fiat Seicento, I've had it since 2000 and now want to buy a new car. I'm thinking of going up North to get a car but I'm not sure what to do with my old one.

Its had an oil leak for a while now which is pretty bad (the oil seems to be coming out the exhaust fumes now as the back of my car has an oily film on it) I’ve brought it to a few garages but they just tell me I need it steam cleaned before they can fix it, but when I ask where I can get that done they look at me blankly!

So really I'm wondering if its worth my while trying to fix up the car to sell it? Is it possible to sell the car to a yard for parts or even to scrap it myself?

If it is worth my while to fix it, does anyone know where I can get the engine and compartment steam cleaned in the Dublin area (preferably in the Dun Laoghaire or Swords areas)?

    Thanks for your time :)

There is always someone who will buy your car. Even if its only to use as a hotrod.

Wait till tomorrow and see what the budget brings in...
More than likely there will be some sort of a scrappage deal on new cars....

Hadn't thought of that, about there being a good scrappage deal in the Budget, fingers crossed.

You wont be able to get the scrappage if your buying up North though.

Thanks Rockiemalt, I'll forward you on a PM now.

Yeah I wouldn't get the scrappage up north, but if its a good amount they bring in it might bring the price of the cars down here in line with what I could get in the North ... plus less of the hassle (doing VRT, selling/scrapping the old car myself)

Its not that I didn't want to support our car industry, but it was just killing me to know I could get a much better car for the same money in the North. I like my bargains :)

...sometimes an NI bargain is not a bargain....DAMHIK.. :(:(

As for your Seicento - to scrap a car, any car, over an oil leak, is just madness. Even if the engine had to come out to fix it, it'd be worth doing.

I'm presuming the car is in reasonable condition, otherwise, and not a complete shed.

Well she's ok, her bodywork is scratched up from car doors opening on her and someone who decided to key her all along one side. And in the recent cold snap the belts have been making noise in cold weather, but I assume thats to do with all the oil on the engine!

I wasn't sure if oil in the exhaust would be a complete disaster for a car or not ... not very up on my mechanics! :o

    Thanks everyone for your help.
