Just in last few hours, listening to youtube, sound is crackling on the laptop.

Not just one clip but all clips.

Any ideas, or is the speaker(s) just screwed?

Does that happen? Say it ain't so...

It could be some foreign object stuck in the speaker, speakers contain magnets and can attract small pieces of metal. Same can happen to mobile phones etc.

Is the sound just crackling on youtube or does it do it when listening to music on WMP or iTunes?

Sorry for hijacking your thread Kraggy but I am getting crackling coming from my inbuilt speakers too. Problem is it happens even when the sound is muted. Laptop just randomly starts talking to itself:p
