As a continuation from the Merc126 thread, following P.M.'s with some of the other members on here a few of us are thinking of meeting up in the Viaduct bar on Tuesday night at 7.30 with a view to setting up a classic car workshop where members could share their knowledge and skills and restore some old unwanted classics where members could use them or the group could sell them on and fund equipment and restore other classic cars. This a non profit venture, the only procedes of sales etc will go back into the club. I suggested a fee to join to buy some basic stuff and there will be a monthly fee for rent, insurance, ESB, etc. The only way this will work is for everyone to be 100% above board and no messing, if it works it could be great for everyone.:)

One small oversight is that I don't know where the Viaduct is.
    C
If it actually happens can the classic car club be decentralised? Some cars in Cork, some in the Midlands, some in Dublin, etc. If spread about it means that cars are more accessible for all.

    Sounds like a great idea.

I won't be taking part myself though due to changes (hopefully) in my circumstances :)

But best of luck with it. My advice would be though that you elect a manager. Nothing worse than too many chiefs and no indians

I think I'll be one of those people who say this will be a great idea, then sit on the fence unwilling to commit time/money. I'm a bit short on both just now. I might drop by to see how it goes. How will we recognise you? Will you be the guy in the car-park sitting in a classic?

Does it have to be Tuesday night? Chapions League night :)

The reason for meeting up at this venue on Tuesday at 7:30PM is because that is the time when the Mercedes club have their informal monthly gathering and there may be likeminded individuals there that would be interested. I am a regular attendee with the Merc club and have already emailed the main organisers of it to let them know of the restoration pool idea and they seem happy enough to discuss the idea further.
So based on how the level of interest and enthusiam goes and peoples willingness to commit then this could grow an operation that does actually restore a car back to something presentable and we all learn something in the process.
What time/place we meet up after that is anyones guess but people can join up afterwards and hopefully the venue will be a location where there is a car or two there to start poking around on.
If anyone knows of a car that could be donated to the pool I sure it could be considered but we would need to establish the criteria first as to determine what should be worthwhile restoring.

I was half-kidding with the time. You're never going to get a time to suit everybody.

I'd say I can definitely make it tomorrow, but my attention might be a bit divided. Will you guys be easy to spot? I don't want to be walking up to random people asking : "Are you from the Internet?" :)

Easy to spot us I suspect, if its dry there will be a few us in the car park tyre kicking around some mercs from 7:30 until it gets dark.

I think it's a great idea, but like Blitzkreiger I'd be lying if I said I had the time to go along. The wife and kid seem to think playing two games of football during the week are enough for me!

Best of luck though, and hope to hear it getting off the ground. :)

Grand - the weather forecast for tomorrow is for showers so I'll probably chance bringing my motorbike to work. I'll be the wet guy in the motorcycle boots....

Is it the one out the bandon road from cork city, just past the chetwynd viaduct on the left?
This is the viaduct on the way into the city, the bar would be on the right of this shot?

Yes. I'd always be coming from the city side so from my point of view it's on the left once you pass the viaduct itself.

So we met up at the Viaduct last night and have 4 signed up people.
We are going looking at a premesis this evening a few miles north of Cork City to check its suitability.
More welcome to come on board if anyone else feel they can commit to this.

Anyone in Kildare or Dublin interested in this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,660 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

Was passing the Bandon Road roundabout at 7:20 last night after a long day of work getting progressively colder and wetter and thought I'd be better off getting home and getting dry. Probably shouldn't have chanced the bike at all but when the forecast said "light showers" I thought I might get away with it. Light showers my arse....

Will have to try and make the next meeting....

I'd be interested. I have a unusual classic car that I'd donate to the group also :)

any one know of a 3 /4 car garage / shed in the cork area that might be suitable for the restoration club - reasonable cost as usual:)

Any more people in the general Cork area that are interested? We have 4 involved so far but would need a few more bodies to get going properly. We have a potential premesis located but will not commit to that until we get agreement from everybody that is and wants to be involved.

I could be tempted, how much is the rent on said potential premesis?

I really just can't afford to right now. I'm looking at 4-5 months before I'd be able to spare even 100 a month. Longer if I decide to go to the champion's league final. I'd like to be involved, but I don't really have time right now either until I finish the part time course I'm doing.

I have a few bits and pieces I could donate. Nothing major though....

Rent is working out at 300/month in total for 800 sq feet approx. ESB would be extra but that should be quite small as the units only we pay for and divided between 6 to 8 people it would be pennies. Rent will be by far the biggest expense and we want to keep that to 50 euro per person. Tools and equipment will be our own initially until we decide how to fund tools for the workshop. If we get continued interest we can contribute extra every month to a sinking fund for workshop equipment which will stay at the workshop. If you feel you may know someone in the Cork area that would be interested we would be delighted to hear from them.
