Advice sought for training between marathons

    Hi all,
First time poster here!! I have being following various threads and there appears to be quite a few experienced and well informed runners. I am just looking for advice in relation to training between marathons? I am scheduled to run Edinburgh at the end of May, then Dublin in October. Once Edinburgh is done I am considering keeping the weekly LSR going i.e. stay around the 13 -15 miles rather than re-starting the 16 week schedule for Dublin from scratch again??? I am reluctant to go back to single digit LSR's as I have just smashed my PB's in the 10K and the half marathon in the last couple of weeks and attribute these to the stamina gained from the LSR.
Any advice would be much appreciated???

Welcome Ruarl. The experienced marathon guys (which I am not) will be along presently. However if this is your first marathon you will afterwards find yourself (1) in peak physical shape and (2) temporarily fatigued and low.

My approach would therefore be to rest well, and do very little for a week or two after Edinburgh. But then yes, I would not be wanting to revert back to a Week 1 programme - you will be in too good a shape for that. So build up the LSR again more quickly, but allow for step-back weeks so that you recover well. Rest and recovery can be under-estimated in value.

Sound words RoyMcC!!! All comments are really appreciated. I suppose to give a background Edinburgh will be my third marathon (Dublin 2006 and NYC 2007). Problem was that I stopped running after both and just found it extremely hard to regain my fitness levels and I don't want to go back to that level again... I decided on the two marathons almost 5 months apart so that I could get my fitness levels up and keep them there in order to have a good crack at DCM09.

What's your target for Edinburgh Rural Ruarl Runner?
You have 148 days (21 weeks) between Edinburgh and Dublin, so you could take three to four weeks to recover, and then kick off an 18 week program. Alternatively, switch to a 10k program for a bit of variety, and try and pick up your pace, before starting a 12 week program. I realized great speed benefits from switching to a 10k program for a while.

    See you in Edinburgh!

Hello KC, No firm predictions but I am looking to go under 4 hours in Edinburgh... Still have to get that monkey off my back !!!! Am currently working off a garmin 3:45 schedule. Appears to be reaping dividends as I have knocked 13 minutes off my half marathon and 6 minutes off my 10K pb's (Connemara half in 1:40 and a 10K in 41 mins).
