Im 29 and work in a decent job earning 30k a year and I just dont like what I do. I go into work everyday depressed and wish I didnt have to.I dont want to sound like an ass as I know I should be grateful as there alot of people who are unemployed right now and would do anything for a decent job. I have thought about either re-training or going travelling but im close to 30 now plus im 13k in debt so thats kinda out.I hate moaning like this. does anyone have any advice.

If your job will pay for extra training that you are interested in then you should take advantage of that.

There are plenty of Part-time professional course available (if work will pay for them all the better).

What do you want to do?

30 isn't too old to retrain. I've just started a masters as I want to the option to move from the industry I am currently working in. This will take me close to 3 years to complete so I'll be 38 when I finish. I'll still possibly have 27 years of work in front of me!

    Boo hoo...

Look out for distance learning courses or part-time ones that will benefit you.
Once you have picked one sit down & set a date that you will be gone out of the place you work, that way you have something to work towards so it might not be as soul destroying to stay going into a place you hate.
Be realistic with the timeline, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to find another company that is stable & definately better to work in, better the devil you know than the devil you don't.
Also work on clearing the debt in the same timeline. At least that way you won't have anything hanging around you're neck if you do decide to go travelling.

    www.nightcourses.com

    Doesn't just have nightcourses.
It shows just about everything available in Ireland.

Ask your HR for support if you find a relevant course to your job

Me too, OP. Same age, and salary of 32k.

I just decided to quit yesterday. Also, because I am a registered student, I am entitled to no benefits. I sat down with my partner, worked out a strict budget, and we are going to live on 20k a year for a bit until I get my head sorted...I'll go insane if I continue in this job!

I am the same. Im in a job i hate and my only problem is i don't know what to do. I honestly have no idea. I was interested in animals and tried for work but couldn't get anything. I couldn't even get volunter work with animals. Maybe its not meant to be. But i have no idea what to do now.

Its depressing in a job you hate. Facing each day is so tiring. Try and pick a deadline and get out of the place you are in. Work on your debt in that time. And maybe even try voluntering work on days you are free.

OP I was in the same situation although i'm mid-20's. Had been in the same role since graduation, I moved to Northern Ireland for my companies new office. I was miserable up there and the recruitment market was doing so well- i hated work etc so I quit and 6 weeks later I can't find any work. I want to change into HR but the market in Dublin is saturated with candidates who are all CIPD qualified which I am not so no hope getting into it.
I'm now going to move to London to pursue HR as they are more leniant on not being CIPD- I'm also going to look into doing a course so I can finally be qualified.

What do you love to do or what would your dream job be (realistically!! :D )

    Do some soul searching,

Everything we need to know is usually revealed to us, you just have to listen to your inner guidance....

Take a risk and try something new even if you just work part time, try give yourself more time to yourself to soul search.

if your nearly 30 then you have worked hard for years, maybe its time you allowed yourself to dream.

    desire, ask believe receive.......

Either way you better do something about this quick. You're still young so you have options, but if you put it off for another 5 years, chances are you'll be stuck there until retirement...how many more miserable mornings is that?

Don't focus on the money, because the money drops significantly in value if the life which it is supporting is dreary and boring and bitter. Earning less but enjoying life more is obviously the wiser choice.

    Good luck.

    Its simple get out!

I was in the same boat as you and i hated my job i really hated it. It was affecting my health I want sleeping. So I i quit i just got up and quit.

It sounds mad but it was the best thing ive ever done ive never been so happy and healthy. Moneys not everthing and you will have to make sacrficies but its well worth it. I used to sit in a crumbey office with no window and work with a nasty old unhelpful man and id count the hours down until lunch so i could sit out in the sunshine for 30mins. Now if its hot tomorrow im going to sit out in the sunshine and enjoy life mate.

Oh and this may sound silly but watch a film called "office Space" its a comedy and it seriously give me the inspiration to quit that job!!!!

op i'm in the same boat. my place is causing me great stress. While i'm not on similar money or even age bracket I can feel your pain. I don't know your occupation and in light of your privacey i reckon keep it to yourself. This is just a stress filled moment probably caused by the recession making you feel vulnerable in your position and "easily replaced" maybe i'm off the course here. Op, do try keep a positivi outlook. Lokk around at what that money has brought you. I'm in serious debt too. Maybe start a new budget where you lose night out with your partner and start paying it off. Do an evening course for the extra training. And DO announce this to your superiors unnofficially (in the canteen etc) so that they can see how versatile of an employee you are and how much of an asset you probably are to them.

Bottom line op, Don't give up. Push on and remember. your gonna be number 1 there one day.

Im sorry Congo im not trying to start a fight with ya but I really dont think thats the best advice for the lad. I tried to stick at my job and it just got worse and worse. I know every situation is different but I really dont think staying in a job you hate just for the money is the best soloution. Life is too short! :)

    Mr tombstone,
I'm sorry if there was a mis-understanding, but that wasn't my point. My point was to train in the evenings outside of work. Make a metnion in work to cause a few ripples and move up the ladder to a more superior posisiton. as i said, I'm open to correction and it was just my 2cents. I hope the Op isnt just staying over financial needs as I am now at the moment but thats un-related (my job).
Either way the op should probably even speak to his/her HR and see if there is anything they can do to relieve the stress caused in work.

My advice re: budget still stands as some good logic. This month I knocked 30% off some debt and plan the same next month. Its tough but can be done op.

Hey firstly I dont want to argue with you and I respect your opinion.

But you are saying to the guy to stay in his job that he hates. Why would you want to move up the ladder if hes finding thta type of work crap? I know what your saying about a night class and I agree its a good idea but its very hard to juggle both ft work and night classes.

I read the op post wrong. I guess i got the message wrong. My advice is actually useless at this point so if mod's would care to delete feel free. I misinterpreted it.

If you don't like what you do, then don't do it. Life is too short to waste. I'd say take a good holiday or go travelling for a while. In terms of debt, if you have €13k outstanding, try and consolidate it into one loan - you might end up paying around €270 per month but at least you'll be managing your debt. Use your job for as long as you can to put some cash aside for travelling/holiday then get out. I'd recommend this rather than going straight into further college or training, as giving yourself some space and time might help you to make better decisions on the direction you want your life to take. I was in a similar position as yourself and wasted a lot of time and money doing various courses to try and make my life interesting while working a depressing job (most of them weren't that interesting but at least I expanded on the number of things I can say I don't like!). Take a break if you can and get the f**** away from this recession talk for a while. See some sun. Go to a place where you don't have to worry about wearing a jacket or bringing an umbrella!
