Shannon Tower: turn right heading 170 and be advised for the sr-71 what ever that is when its at home, on final on your 12 o clock.

    very hi-tec terminology lol

Would a blackbird not be at far, far greater altitude than anything on approach?

it sounded like sr-71, i seriously doubt it was one lol, plus, aint they not in use anymore?

i just taught it was funny when the controller said "what ever that is when its at home"

Could you have mistaken SR-71 for S-61? The Shannon base S-61N, would have thought though that the controller would have known what that was!

Obviously not a Lockheed SR71 as they have been scrapped, plus they wouldn't be on finals into Shannon!

    Possibly a Cirrus SR22 or a Comet Stinson SR7?!

I know how that controller feels. I used to know all the aircraft out there. Now there's proliferation of new aircraft with new designations. Light aircraft, microlights, biz jets. Even the thing I fly is unique in itself and I find myself explaining to controllers what it is. Shannon ATC often have time for a bit of time for light hearted comments. They're not too busy.

    Where to start?
First, if traffic is on finals and in your 12 o clock, then you are lined up at one end of the runway, with the arrival landing at the other - not a great situation, and not very likely.
Second, turning right heading 170 would mean Rwy 06 in use, an unlikely heading from this runway, and was 06 really in use at that time?
Are you sure about anything that you heard?

Not too busy? Do you know what busy is for an ATCO? Didn't think so
I know how that controller feels
Based on what you've said - its very obvious that you don't have the first clue about what a controller feels or does for that matter.
I've lurked around this thread for a while, but thanks for providing the inspiration to have me defend my profession

Whoa, mister flippin' hypersensitive there. Calm down. If you actually read what I said you'll see it was intended to be lighthearted in the context of the original post. I work Shannon regularly and at times it's just me and whoever is on duty on air, occasionally I know him personally and we exchange pleasantries. Other times it's like LAX at rush hour. So do I know what busy is for an ATCO? No. But I do know what busy is for a pilot with two radios on the go and few minor tasks like flying the thing.

    As for this
I know how that controller feels
If you actually READ what I said, I state
Now there's proliferation of new aircraft with new designations. Light aircraft, microlights, biz jets.
I don't know how he feels about his job but I do understand the comment about
the sr-71 what ever that is when its at home
. There are so many new type aircraft out there. I can't barely keep up. Maybe it's the same for him.

You don't have to defend your profession. I wasn't attacking it. Now go and calm down, pick a fight with someone else.

well firstly, it seems we have a couple of cranky feckers here so lets loose the attitude!

secondly, i never said it was on on finals for shannon.

it was actually directing a ryanair and he was saying caution the what ever it was on finals for Abbeyshrule.

and the only reason i posted this topic was because it was quite funny that the Controller said "what ever that is when its at home"

why do people have to take things so to heart?

Not looking for a fight whatsoever, just setting the record somewhat straighter.
The knowing what an ATCO feels comment was taken out of context to illustrate the absurdity of the "they're not too busy" jibe (what else was it?)
I have no doubts that you exchange pleasantries with the ATCOs - we've probably spoken. Don't see the lightheartedness of the post.
Maybe i'm just missing that funnybone!
    Peace bro
Boardwalker ,again just to set the record straight, your post quotes Shannon Tower, The only traffic Tower works is at Shannon Airport and its immediate environs. Maybe the unit was Shannon Control. The quote seemed so non standard that i felt that something wasn't quite adding up.
this makes a little bit more sense since it was not the Tower that was involved. Not cranky, just a bit pedantic!
    Peace to you too

Good to see everyone's friends again.

Sometimes its great to hear some lightheartedness on the radio.I listen to delivery, ground, tower and control at NZWN quite a lot as a lot of the positions are shared and you often hear jokes and some light hearted slagging. On several occasions you can hear controllers laughing at each other in the background or sharing a joke with pilots they know. Obviously you're not going to hear that kind of stuff at somewhere very busy :)

Last Sunday the towers last words to me were "Cleared to land 34..and Whiskey Alpha Charlie you'll be happy to know lunch has arrived!" :) The aero club had phoned the tower to tell us to come in from touch and goes as fish and chips had arrived :)

Firstly Shannon Tower would not have been giving anyone headings to turn to. The purpose of a tower controller is to provide control over an airport and its (small) airspace, it only has a radar for reference purposes

Secondly, yes Shannon Control are by their nature light hearted and regularly are friendly on frequency- I have heard alot of stuff, including them giving out match results and updates when the GAA is on, asking for words for the crossword at night and so on.
