I was seriously thinking of the 25-06 for this coming seson but went from the a 6.5x55 to 7mm08...I have heard great reports of both 25-06 and 7mm08...Id say the 25-06 shoots a tad flatter than the 7mm08?

i would be very fond of the 25,06 .its a excellent cal .flat shooting hard hitting .

never gave the 7mm08 any thought .

The amount of meat destroyed is more due to the bullet than the cartridge.

shot placement .the only people i hear on about meat damage are lads that have no faith in there ability.

if your chesting a animal why shoot it through the shoulders if you hunting for the table .

put your bullet behind the shoulder or a low neck or dont take the shot .

the shoulders make the finest stew .

High volocity rounds will hydraulic,i dont think rangers are generally too worried about carcase damage.

I agree, well said. I cannot see how a person who does not care about meat damage can have respect or concern for his quarry or care for where his shot strikes.

Rangers use various calibers, it varies and it is up to individual preference a lot of the time. The .25-06 is very popular and so is the sako 75. Meat damage is all down to bullet placement. Any high velocity bullet striking bone in the shoulders of an animals will do extensive damage, if it doesn't you shouldn't be using it.

A rangers first concern is to kill the animal cleanly. Wounded animals use up too much culling time. It's unprofessional and bad PR. Animals running from heart shots take too long to search for and results in lost animals and time wasted.
Shoulder and neck shots put the animal down on the spot allowing follow up shots on other animals. There is increased meat damage with shoulder shots but it is better than losing a carcass or long searches. But every animal culled presents a different situation, there are many rules and guides about bullet placement, it's knowing what to use and when.
Culling is a numbers game not sport. It is business and time is money, venison is worth €1.50/kg delivered to the gamedealer with all waste and damage removed. Ranger time is €19/hour @ 39 hours per week. The idea is to remove the greatest amount of animals in the least amount of time and to do it professionally and safely. It's nothing like sport shooting for the table and should never be compared with it ethically. The objectives are different, which is why Rangers sport hunt in their personal time like other sporting hunters do. Culling is not as much fun as you might think and it's not meant to be sporting, its meant to be efficent.
