im a part time youth worker assistant
so im not offical a youth worker but I can comment on the youth workers since I work with them
basically the hrs can be very long, great job satifiaction but You have to be a bit mad to work with youngsters tbh and with the recession its very hard to get work as a youth worker
also alot of paper work to do

By its nature, you are takling working evenings and weekend, i.e. anti-social hours. Maynooth do community based Certs and Diplomas in Youth & Community work which can be studied at night in local centres, give them a call.

You should have a crystal clear criminal record, as even a minor offence could put you behind another candidate.

Other qualifucations which could give you the edge are addiction studies, art, drama.

Maynooth is too far distance wise,
I have a squeky clean background, other qualifications are first aid and IT degree not sure if that any help.
Is there like a youth worker union or society I could check up for information?

Maynooth run their course in local centres all over the country. Check out National Youth Council of Ireland

First Aid would be fairly standard, but having an IT degree should really give you an edge and you should be able to sell it at an interview.
