Can anyone name this PPV event for me?

All I can remember is that it was an NWA (later known as WCW) event that involved a knock-out tournament of 16 (or poss 32) TAG-TEAMS. It would have taken place in and around the time of the WWF event Wrestlemania IV (ie March/April 1988).

I may be wrong about the promotion (might not be NWA, pretty sure tho) but it was definetly American, defo Tag-team tournament and and at the very least sometime around 1988-1989 but my memory tells me it was some sort of rival PPV to WM IV?).

    Thanks.

Just read up on WrestlerWar. I'm pretty sure that's not it.

The event I'm on about defo had knock-out format with first round, quarter-finals , semi-finals and final etc.

That sounds like the annual Crockett Cup which had 16 tag teams (32 wrestlers total) in an invitational tournament for a massive cheque at the end of it.

It wasn't a rival PPV to Wrestlemania IV in 1988, because that's when the first Clash Of The Champions took place. Clash was NWA's answer to Saturday Nights Main Event.

    Hope that helps. :)

I've read up on this Crockett Cup event and I'm satisfied it was the 1988 edition that I remember (based on participants listed). Thanks all who helped.

Glad you found it, but do yourself a big favour, try to forget about the 1988 one. It wasn't great as it was Crockett's last gasp to try and compete with WWE and it wasn't a great success.

However if you can find the 1986 Crockett Cup, that is fairly awesome. Main event on that was was also Flair/Rhodes that has to be seen. Also in that tourney the Sheepherders vs Hector & Chavo Guerrero is a pretty good match too, the former being pretty dangerous heels back then.

Of course, that was before they became a cartoon in 1989 by going to the WWE as the Bushwhackers.
