Iceland Travel in Summer or Winter?

Ok checking out the prices for flying to Iceland sometime this year

Was looking at going the October Bank holiday and compared the prices of doing a DIY to that of the package of Wallace Travel. Not much in the difference and with Wallace its direct rather than via London Manchester etc

Now wondering if it would be better to go in the Summer and do the DIY trip or is it worth going in October just to see the Northern Lights and suffer the cold? Although I did hear it can be cold in the Summer also ?

Ive never been but I have researched it quite a bit as I intended to go last year and it fell through :(

There seems to be no guarantee of the northern lights, you are depending on the weather conditions being right to see them. Also bear in mind that a winter trip means a lot less daylight compared to summer when it is bright well into the night.

I checked out Wallace and it seems they do good packages, iirc they might also sell you flight only and you can do your own thing/hire a car etc ( though car hire there is very expensive, this might have changed with the economy in a mess though )

One good airline I found was http://icelandexpress.com/ who fly from London. I signed up to their email newsletter and they send out sale offers on flights every 3 months or so. Last one had London to Iceland for £90 one way which was pretty decent. Worth checking out if you want to go the DIY route.
