Italy for student couple?

Myself and the OH were talking about going on our first holiday together and for a change, he actually suggested somewhere other than "Idunnoyoudecide"... He wants to go to Italy...

My question is: Where would be the best place in Italy to both relax and chill out (preferably near the sea) and see some cool sights. I don't know about going to Rome, we want to stay in a hotel, and are willing to save up for a decent 2 or 3 star hotel, but even those seem ridiculously overpriced in Rome. Is all of Italy the same? Honestly, is it even worth considering Italy on a student budget? (I'd be thinking of spending around 800-1000 euro for a week, including expenses while we're there)

I havent been to Rome, but I can highly recommend Lake Garda, in the north of Italy, between Milan and Venice!

We've been about 5 times now, always wanting to go back! Great weather from May to September, usually 25c upwards. Beautiful lake, water for swimming, great food and drink, really relaxed and pretty cheap. You can also get a train to Verona and Venice, about 1 and 2 hours respectivley, for some sightseeing!

Cheap flights to Bergamo (Milan) with Ryanair, then either get a train from Bergamo to Lake Garda, or book a car transfer (more pricey, but less hassle!) We stayed along the south east part, in Lazise and Bardolino. Lasize is a great place, vey nice beach.

Basically the whole coastline of the lake is dotted with these campsites, very popular over there, where you can rent a mobile home (very high standard), drive with your own caravan, or pitch a tent!

Pretty cheap compared to package holiday prices, we never payed more than €400 per person for a week in June or September, flights & accomodation, but you might pay a bit more for July/August.

Try gardalake.it for more info, or google!

    hey,

only been to Rome but honestly did find it that expensive - as a couple you should try for a really good B&B rather than a hotel - some hotels are actually apartments converted. Have a look at www.venere.com - I live by it! The reviews are great in it.

And you would spend no where near €800-1k there a week!! the food is pretty cheap - i'm comparing it with living in Dublin - everywhere is cheaper than here!
