knee problem - advice

    hey folks!

I don't post very often here but I do sometimes like to read some of the threads ;) I did the half connemarathon two weeks ago, my first ever! Did it in 2:26hrs, was happy enough as I'd never run that distance before.

Anyhoo.. My problem is with my right knee. I think the root of it goes back a bit. I've sprained my right ankle a few times over the years and I know its a bit weaker than it should be. Just before christmas I hurt my achilles somehow. After a few sessions with the physio, rest over christmas, and some orthotic insoles, it all seemed sorted. However, about 2 weeks before the connemarathon, I was doing some bike training to mix things up a bit, and felt a twinge in my knee. I thought it'd just go away. Running on it seemed fine.. until race day  After about 3-4miles, my knee started getting sore. I finished it, but afterwards my knee was killing me. Very sore to bend. Rested it for a few days, wasn't swollen but had a hot water bottle on it to help blood flow. All seemed ok so I went for my first run today since.. and again after about 3-4 miles it started to flare up again :(

Knee problems do seem to be common with runners.. do ye think I should go back to the physio again? .. or get my gait analysed again? (had it done a few years ago).

It's so frustrating being injured. I really enjoy running and today was just perfect for it! so Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers guys

The best advice I can give is to visit your GP. He should be able to tell you exactly what is wrong and what is required for you to get back running injury free asap. Injuries are frustrating (especially recurring ones) but it's best to get a proper diagnosis straight away and nip it in the bud.

I would recommend you make an appointment with your physio asap to get them to check it out.

I reckon physio first, as most GP's don't have sufficient knowledge with sports related injuries in my opinion.

Also suggest you go to a sports physio as opposed to any random physio.

Injuries are a nightmare and very frustrating.
I have a knee injury at the moment (also after Connemara), and just hoping the physio can sort it out before London in 3 weeks.

Hope all goes well for you.

    I would second this advice.

Many doctors can be clueless when it comes to sport related injuries.

I went to the sports clinic in Dublin http://www.sportssurgeryclinic.com/
for physio and they knew exactly what was wrong with my knee. And after intensive physio they had it perfect.

I still get a twinge every now and again but nothing near as horrible as it was.

Ask for Claire, she's excellent! :)

I would also recommend the sports clinic, i've had knee problems all my life up until i visited them.
Aparently because i didnt get it looked at soon enough ( i ran/played footie through the pain) it now has the appearance internally as a 50 - 60 years olds knee.
But i am now pain free thanks to them (and VHI)
