Hello to all, just happened across this bulletin board and thought I'd ask a question.

I have a UK registered car which I'll be bring over to Dublin when I take up a job there.

I did intend selling it in the UK, however I am running out of time very rapidly!

I was wondering if there was a market for UK cars and how difficult it would be to swap it to an Irish registration.

Also, any idea how much it would be worth? It's a 1999 Jaguar XJ8 4.0 Sovereign. It's a long wheel base version with approximately 105000 miles, with full service history etc.

Any tips would be most appreciated.

    Best regards, Paddy

It would be a really hard car to sell here, not only due the make (not really as popular here as the UK), engine but also an Irish resident would have to pay VRT to get Irish plates, a tax at about 36% of what the goverment value the car at. Irish motor tax (seperate to the once off VRT import duty) for that car would be based on CC and is about EUR2000 per year, likely due to increase on Tuesday. You can get an idea of the asking price here on www.Carzone.ie , bearing in mind those cars will likely include the VRT charge already (ie a large proportion of the price is actually tax).

If you want Irish plates and are moving here (and have lived in the UK upto this point) then you can basically swap them over (some provisos apply, check revenue.ie) to Irish plates with no VRT charge. If you are over here for upto 6mths then you dont have do anything, keep it on the UK plates.

Bear in mind that you could sell it to someone in Northern Ireland, they obviously dont have ROI tax laws and so on.

Slight correction - road tax would be about €1500 on that car.

The car is probably worth €4-5k trade, and that's with the VRT paid.

Saleproof in Ireland in the current market unfortunately.

Thanks for the responses guys - looks like I might eBay it in the UK - probably only worth £1500-2000

The market for thirsty gas guzzlers is slowly disappearing.

Interesting about the tax - it's only about £200/year in the UK...!

    Thanks again, Paddy
