Private Car Sales idea - (sparked from Car Swap post)

A slight variation on the car swap theme posted earlier that might actually work.

    Buying
Sometimes the biggest pain when you are buying a car, particularly if you are after a specific make/model/spec is that you have the traipse all over the country for viewings.

    Selling
Right now it is nigh on impossible to sell so anything that could boost potential sales is worth a look.

    My twist on the idea:

It's not really a swap meet but a focal point for prospective buyers to meet private sellers. A "Privates Only" forecourt for the want of a better description.

    A worked example:

If you were to set up a company to run a service like this, this is how it might go. Arrange a marque or car type specific meet, e.g. a BMW meet. Charge a nominal fee to prospective sellers, with the lure that you will be advertising a BMW private sales gathering.

The prospective buyer knows that they will potentially see lots of private sale BMWs in one place.

The seller improves his/her chances of selling as the target audience should be more likely to be in the market for a BMW seeing as they have showed up.

You could do something similar for other categories, not just make:
    - diesel only meet
    - 4x4 sale
    - estate/avant/touring meet
    - luxo barges
    - superminis
How would that sound? Would it be a runner? They do something similar in Australia where back packers sell their bangers to each other every Sunday morning at a set location, this scheme would obviously have to be more than just bangers!!

How it might get off the ground
In reality would see this work much better as an add-on service for someone like Carzone rather than a standalone separate business. Carzone could offer this as a supplemental service when a customer enters their ad. When the customer enters their car details they are told about suitable meetings that they can bring their car along to.
It should be free because I think that they could use it as a differentiator (if there was competition). Surely it would boost sale chances for their customers? By doing that it makes their magazine/internet advert a more attractive place to advertise.
What I am trying to say is maybe Carzone should not expect a revenue from these events directly at the beginning, look at it as a value-add service to attract new business to its existing service. When it is established then it could look at a revenue model.

As for venue, somewhere like the Showgrounds in Cork. Entry for prospective sellers would simply be a print out of the advert for the car they are selling. The ad would show clearly which meeting type that the seller is eligible to enter (just so you don't get a plonker in a supermini turning up for a 4x4 sale!). Punters in free.

    What do people think?
