Some videos have perfect volume, others too low

Sometimes the videos I download at home have really low volume but it's okay because I can turn up the sound on my stereo which the box is connected to but I'm in a friends now and her laptop only goes up so high, even though some videos do play loud enough.

I've have VLC volume and Windows XP's master volume and all volume controls set to the max.

Is there anything I can do to the low volumes ones to make them sound like the high volume ones?
