Importing a car - Help!

I've just brought in a car from the Uk and have tried to register it this morning to be told the form the garage gave me is not correct. I need the log book. I have contacted the garage who have sent it to Wales. I contacted them who told me it can take a month for me to get it back.
Where does this legally leave me driving on the roads - anyone any ideas?
Could they take the car off me?

You should have checked with the VRO (or here) before importing the car - they would have told you that you need the V5. You can't register the car without it, but the VRO might give you a cover letter for the interim?

Main thing is that you have insurance cover which you can get for a temporary period on yellow plates. Get an updated policy doc from the insurance company confirming this.

Did the dealer know you were exporting the car? They're idiots if they did.

Has the car got a current UK tax disc? If so that's a good thing as it'll draw less attention than an empty disc holder. If you are stopped, once you explain the situation you should be ok, but technically you should not drive it until registered.

Yeah it has tax and is insured (although haven't received that disc yet). They did know that it was going to Ireland - maybe I should give them the benefit of the doubt and they didn't know??????

I know people will drive around for years on yellow plates - me - give me 2 weeks and I'll be stopped!!!!! Typical!

I know, I don't like driving around without the proper discs and reg etc.. I don't care less what other people do, just keep my own house in order. We brought an import in from the north on Saturday, by Monday afternoon the VRT was paid and it was on it's new plates, and by this afternoon the new tax and insurance discs were on her.

As regards your insurance - you won't get a disc issued for yellow plates - you will need to have your Irish reg before you get a physical disc. I'd stick your existing disc from your previous car (assuming you have one) in the window as even though the reg will be different, the policy # will be correct. Better to show one that not show any for the next month imo.

If you need to drive the vehicle before getting it VRT'd, then you should approach your local Revenue office. They can issue you with a letter which will keep the Customs from your throat. As for the Garda Sicini, you insurance Co will usually issue temporary cover with an appropriate letter showing you are covered. As far as the road tax goes, it's up top you to convince the guardians of the peace that you will be paying arrears on the tax and that they don't need to bust you for non-display.

I've found Swansea to be quite helpfull in the past and I've had replacement "log books" (V5) issued in less than 2 weeks.
