    Hi,

As far as I know, dealers - more specifically used car dealers - don't have to offer any warranty when selling a car.

    Anyone confirm or deny?

    Thanks.

If the contract specifies 'trade sale, sold as seen', then no, they don't - but it must be with the understanding of both the seller, and purchaser.

Dealers must offer min 3 months parts and labour on engine and gearbox afaik.

Edit: yes unless above stipulation of "Trade Sale, sold as seen" is applied.

I don't think they have to offer a warrenty, but who would buy a car off a dealer who won't stand over it?

Trade/Sold as seen is different and it's up to the customer to ask for this, unless they are trade:D

I've always been a little confused about this because I think the Sale of Goods act states that you are always entitled to a warranty for a reasonable period, the only exceptions being that either (a) selling this type of product is not the sellers normal business or (b) you have been made aware of any faults in the product.

What makes it worse is the fact that the law doesn't specify what a reasonable period is! I would say if you get a 3 month warranty and something goes wrong after that, you might still have some comeback, especially if the problem is potentially dangerous. But you might have a hard time convincing the dealer of that!

In any case, Del2005 is right - lots of dealers will say "the cars fine, won't give you any trouble" but then refuse to put their money where their mouth is! I would never buy from a dealer like that.
